I have a boat outfitted with 2000 OMC gauges. About a year ago I repowered with an E-TEC 90.
When I first got the boat after the repower, the voltmeter seemed to be working correctly, i.e. voltage never got much past 14V, would drop on start, etc.
Now, when I turn on the key, it actually pegs the voltmeter, even when the motor is not running. I have my sonar unit hooked to the starter battery, and it reads 13.8V or less (also verified with a multi-meter), depending on how long the motor has been running. The motor runs fine and the batteries look OK, so I'm pretty sure the voltmeter is wrong.
I suspected a bad ground or a short somewhere, but all of the wires are solid, and the connectors are tight and clean, and I can't see anything obviously wrong with the wiring.
The boat has three batteries: 1 starter, 2 for a trolling motor. One of the TM batteries can also be switched to act as backup battery for the starter, so it shares a common ground with the starter, but it is usually isolated from the starter by a battery switch.
Any thoughts or suggestions on how to troubleshoot or the cause of the problem would be appreciated. Do these things have a calibration screw?
Thanks in advance
