My 91 evinrude 225 idles erraticly when put in neutral. Sometimes it will idle at 550 rpm like it should and others at 950-1000 rpm. All it takes to bring it back to 550rpm is to wiggle the throttle back and forth between forward and neutral and it idles down. Any idea what is causing this? Im puzzled. Is there a switch somewhere in the throttle linkages that slow the idle just prior to the shift.

Re: Erratic idle

Your engine may have a shift interrupter, I'm not sure about that year model. If it does, it will be a switch on the starboard side down by the shift cable. What it does is kills the starboard bank of cylinders when shifting. It could be out of adjustment or defective.

c/6
Hooty
