Here's a puzzler. My motor started to run really hot about 50 yards from the ramp. I watched the temp gauge start up off the pin really quick. I shut down when it went past 160 and paddled back in. Here's the puzzling bit. I installed new head gaskets, t'stats, water deflectors, back plate gaskets. Basicly all the stuff that's cooling related. Dropped the lower unit pulled the pump impeller and it is good (only about 5 hours old anyway). The only thing i found was about a half inch crack in the impeller liner in the stainless steel. It goes vertically from the open end (bottom). Could this be enough to allow the pump to not prime and therefore not pump water? I'm all ears guys, this is a wierd one.

You can tell if the pump is working, crack and all, by pulling the hoses from the head to the thermostat block, while the motor's running (briefly). This won't work too well if you're running on the flushmuffs, because you're household water pressure will supplement the pump's & you won't get a good test. So, need to be down the launching ramp, or in a BIG barrel of water. I use a pretty big one so that the lower unit is a ways under water, because I think in a little one, the air bubbles from the exhaust might mess up the pump impeller.

A crack or scoring in the liner or wear plate is cause for rejection (AND the pump failing to pump). Get a new liner and make sure it's sealed to wear plate using hardening Permatex SPARINGLY. Make sure no sealer gets inside or in the little hole.

Test for proper operation after assembly by running on a hose adapter for 5 to 10 minutes. Verify block temp by touching cylinder head.

Re: E'rude 88spl overheat

Put new pump kit in yesterday, and started in a big barrel. Motor started to heat up really fast so I shut down pulled the thermostat hoses and the she ran cool with great flow out of both heads. I pulled the 'stats (They're almost new, about 3 hours run time) and did the saucepan on the stove test with a good automotive thermometer. Both stats opened at approximately 155F. I put every thing back together and took the boat out, and it ran fine with normal temps. I just hope there isn't something broken off in the cooling passages somewhere that is intermittently blocking waterflow.

You could have one or both of the head gaskets on backwards, and block the water passages. The gaskets are marked.

I'm concerned about the t-stats, They should open at around 140, not 155.

-John
