Ok, so today we went on a venture to look at a "few" motors. It has been an uneventful year thus far, 2 washers died, dryer died, furnace died, van died, then got laid off to boot. So back to the questions at hand heh.
We managed to pick up 6 motors and 2 trollers today for $125, not a bad start i hope. Out of them there was a clinton (unknown HP) an Eska 5.1 CI, Ted Williams 3hp, Ted Williams 5hp, Ted Williams 7.5hp And a mercury 5hp. They are all around early late 70's except the merc which im thinking more of a 60's. the trollers were nothing special, so wont even mention them ^^.
I spent a few hours fiddling with them, changed out gas, checked plus and for spark and all the normal things. The Clinton is pretty much for parts i guess, the tank is rusted out, they put an external feed on it, and i did not bother to test it nor the 7.5hp. The Eska, Clinton, and two smaller Ted Williams all have similar lower units, and will interchance at the motor, so I know they are from the same manufacture. The Ted Williams and Eska have Tecumseh motors for sure.
Now out of the 6 thus far, I managed to get the 5hp TW to fire and run, ran it for 4 or 5 minutes til warm, but could not restart it, it seems as though the float is out of adjustment, leaking fuel out of the intake end of the carb, so its overfueling. The 3hp TW seems to have no compression, so have not fiddled with it anymore as yet. The question here though, is the carb interchangeable between the 3hp and 5hp TW engines? Being Tecumseh's I am sure I can re-ring the 3hp, but given its great source of parts for the 5hp, if the carb will resolve the issue and get the 5hp running then awesome, we have another motor and parts to spare.
The Eska 5.1ci, I cannot seem to find any information on. It looks like a lawnmower engine cowling, in a wonderful orange color haha. A touch of ether, and fresh gas, now can be started by my 9year old daughter in half a pull. I am stoked it runs so great, put it on the boat and took the kids for a little cruise. However, I cannot seem to determine the HP rating on this engine?? It's a 5.1cu Tecumseh, I am guessing 3 or 3.5hp? It's no racer ^^ but cruises the lake beautifully.
The other motors I will be tearing into tomorrow, I would love to see the 7.5hp run, and the Merc, seeing as my associate and I have both been laid off, we are hoping this small investment will put motors on both our boats, and hopefully replace the cost we paid and then some. Wife told me, I been laid off, cannot seem to find employment, best to get resourcefull and try and turn any profit no matter how small ^^
And for my Johnson Seahorse HD25 in my other post, its still not running, I got hot spark both cylinders now, but cannot get her to stay running =( "IF" I keep pumping the primer it will run but nothing special. So maybe carb is out of adjustment, havnt gotten into it any further yet. I have a possible trade for the work on it versus my parts HD25, so contemplating this as a means to getting it running.
Anyhow, I have written a book, really just wanted to share and put it all up for critisim, hoping spmeone can lead me to if the TW 3hp and 5hp can interchange on the carb. And hopefully what exactly the lil 5.1ci Eska is. Posting a pick of the Eska on the back of the "nasty" boat as my daughter stated when I brpought it home haha, a LOT of work went into her but shes a great lil fishin boat now =)
