i have been reading threads on the eska decided to post since you guys seemed to have great info. i bought an eska 5hp #1705C recently and could use a little help. first outboard, it was cheap. its starting like crap and doesn't run as well as it should(sounds) when i bought it. i know, i know, its an eska its what they do, lets skip all of that. i found out my fuel mix was wrong after reading these forums. i had 100:1 amsoil instead of the 24:1 i just found it took. plan on changing the plug and wire i found was not in great shape. plan on cleaning the carb. now the question is should i do anything else right off? and what oil should i mix with the fuel? thankyou very much

Nothing wrong with an Eska. When tuned properly they start easily and run well. Being air-cooled they make a bit more noise than a water-cooled motor and---like ALL big singles---they have some vibration not noticeable in a twin.

Use either TCW-3 outboard oil or any good quality oil for air-cooled 2 cycle motors, just adhere to the 24/1 mix!

There are literally hundreds of posts on this board on reviving and tuning Eskas that will apply to your motor. Virtually any question you can think of has already been asked and answered numerous times and it's all here for you with only a small investment in due diligence on your part. Look them up and read them carefully while you wait on the shop manual you need to get on order.

Start by looking up your motor at <http://home.earthlink.net/~brixent/eskaid.htm> to get basic data and tune-up specs for it.

Addendum:

Register for the Yahoo Eska group at <http://groups.yahoo.com/group/eskaoutboards/>
The files there has a Tecumseh shop manual you will find useful.
