i found my eska to be a 1970 5hp. i know the head is air cooled and the foot water cooled, but where should i look to see if the water pump is working properly?

On the back of the motor, but above the plate above the prop, there should be a 'mist' coming out. Also,I believe your motor is "water cooled" in that the pump in the lower unit exchanges water with a heat exchanger just below the engine block.
DHP

Re: eska cooling

ok i fired it up in a test barrell and i all i got was a super fine mist if anything, even at wot. i think itsnot cloged as i could blow compressed air through the holes and it came out the bottom, beneath the plate. so any ideas if i need a new pump?

neil

water intake is located just below the anti-cavatation plate on each side of the gearcase.
water outlets are a series of holes aligned vertically on each side of the upper leg, just below the swivel bracket. "if a SPRAY of water does not emerge from the outlet holes when motor is running" time to overhaul the pump.
