Eska spark plug gap

I bought a sears original 2 cycle outboard engine repair manual covering most all of the 2 cycle engines, I noticed that the listed spark plug gap for the 640 series was .35, I had been gapping plugs at .30. there is also some variance in point gaps between model numbers so .20 is not always right for every engine.
Also this manual has specs. on just about every moving part right down to the inividual size of the needle's in the rod bearings...it gives a much more accurate description of timing procedures even for the the 9.9 which seems to be more complicated and require a couple of specialized tools. If I ever get another scanner I will make some pdfs of the engine specs, may even try my camera on a page and see what I can do. I also have a original Eska repair manual for 1968-76...its worthless compaired to the sears manual, nothing in it that you can't find on the web. Would not wast my money on thoughs ebay Eska repair manuals even for the lower unit...a good parts diagram will do just fine.

If there something special model related I can lookup for you let me know...I can go up to T640-18

Re: Eska spark plug gap

I've got two old motors that I believe are eskas. The first one I'm pretty sure of. It's a ted williams model #: 217-5888-2. The second one may be an eska or a clinton. It's a Ward's Seaking, but I can't match up the model # with anything I've seen so far. Model #: bj9 1106d. I'd be gratefull for the correct ID on it. The lower unit looks almost exactly like the one on the Ted Williams, right down to the chrome "V" shaped piece in front of the foreward lower unit bolt.:)

look for the engine model no. on a metal tag behind the carb, if its tecumseh it will read like T6xx-xx, I know that Eska had originally bought lowers from clinton to get started in the biz....a picture would be nice. wards no. are hard to come up with, not much info out there...the tecumseh no. usually is the key to unlock the wards mystery.

some clinton info here. file link named J9 the file is 24327814.pdf in the marine engine section

The AJ-9 & BJ-9 were interim models by Clinton for 1969 after the J-9 but before the K series began in the '70s. See my answer in

I have the manual for my Eska 7hp model 1747-C. I can give you some numbers for 2 companies that sell parts for the Eska outboards and are the only ones that I know of who carry parts for them including props.

Re: Eska spark plug gap

This was a lot of help! Thanks!

Mrcrabs, your link was really full of good info for my Ted Williams!

Jacob, I don't really need parts for the eska, but I'd like to have those phone numbers anyway if you don't mind.

Tom, That's GREAT info! The Clinton model # was really giving me trouble! I followed both of those threads & put them in my favorites! I'm glad you responded. Are you any good with Scott Atwater numbers? I've got one of those I can't seem to identify, also. The Model # is: E463-58789, but it's a single cyl, not a twin. I'm guessin it's the 3.6hp. I have pics if ya want, or I can start a new thread if need be.

If it's a small single you can bet on it! It was sold by many retailers as well as S-A----Firestone being a notable example. There are many of them still around and threads about them appear regularly on the AOMCI public forum open to anyone. <http://www.aomci.org/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?board=askamember>
The single thing I recall best from those threads is that they are notorious for having steel gastanks that are seldom free of holes at this point in time.:(

In the era they were produced S-A was 2nd only to OMC in sales and that little 3.6 single was produced in greater quantities than all other models combined----so there's hardly a shortage of inexpensive parts motors.

Re: Eska spark plug gap

Tom, I honestly haven't called the scott guy yet, but that number indicates, from my research, a 7.5hp twin, so I kinda gave up. I got family stuff to do tomorrow, but I'll give him a call ASAP. You were so good with the Clinton numbers, I thought you might know about this one. I'll post after I call him tomorrow. Thanks.

@Scanman - Certified Parts Corporation 608-752-9441
Discount Marine 906-466-2180

Those people carry mostly gaskets and props. If your clutch messes up the only way you can fix it is to weld it, no replacement parts for it, or at least I couldnt find them. Hope that helps. They carry copies of the original parts manuals and other manuals for the Eskas.

Re: Eska spark plug gap

you have to watch ebay for the clutches and even then its risky unless you know how to test them, and explain it to the seller...9 out of 10 will not understand how they work.

Re: Eska spark plug gap

I really don't plan on runnin either of em a lot. It would be cool to have them in workin order, though. My girl would really get a kick outta seein her dad's old motors run again. Those are the clinton & the Scott Atwater. If they ever need a clutch, or somethin major like that, I'll probably just piece em out on e-bay. The Ted Williams was runnin, on a boat, 15 yrs ago when I put it in storage, so it probably only needs a carb kit & a plug. I appreciate all the help. You guys never fail to amaze me!:D
