We have just purchased a brand new 2006 Four Winns Horizon 180 bowrider, and I am now patiently waiting for the days to pick it up. My dad has asked me to determine some equipment that needs to be purchased for the boat, and I would like some second/third opinions.

What equipment (beyond the standard safety products like whistle, bailer, etc.) should I look at purchasing? Is there any specific piece that many boaters simply "cannot go without"? Also, anchor vs paddles, what might be the smarter choice?

Thanks for the suggestions.

Also, being new to the forums, I have found them extremely helpful and hilarious (stupid people tricks... classic).

Your very first challenge will be to get the right lines in the right lengths. A task that most of us fail the first time around. Here is a good thread - Braided vs twisted nylon rope.

Kelly Cook

One wearable PFD of appropriate size for each passenger plus a throwable such as a cushion.
An anchor AND a paddle.
A rope for the anchor would be advisable. ;)
Fire Extinguisher of appropriate type and size.
A compass.
A LAKE MAP!
Spare prop and the tools to swap it.
A working flashlight. Take special note of the Working part. ;)
Cooler and ice, don't forget the beverages. ;)

I like to have a few things over and above the usual safety stuff.
Spare drain plugs
First aid kit, especially a Tourniquet and pressure bandage.
Basic tools
Tow rope
Jumper leads
Sharp knife

Also make sure you pack plenty of common sense into a clear, sober head......... have fun and enjoy your new boat.
