Hey Fossil,

The engine starts, I just can't get it to stay on to put it in base timing mode so I can set the timing.

Ok, does it have voltage at the coil then with the key in run. If not, thats your problem.

Re: Est Ignition Problem 96 Mecrusier 3.0LX ((((((PLEASE HELP)))))))

Here is the procedure I am following, and if I try and start it with the cut off switch bypassed, it just won't start. If I connect them while it's running, the engine kills.

Mercruiser Marine Engine Timing Procedures
IMPORTANT: Failure to follow these timing procedure instructions will result in improper timing causing performance problems and possible severe engine damage.

3.0L Models Only

1. Connect timing light (91-99379 or similar) to No. 1 spark plug wire. Connect power supply leads on light to 12 volt battery. Refer to Specifications ? ?Engine Rotation and Firing Order,? for cylinder numbering and location.
2. Connect a shop tachometer to engine.
NOTE: Before starting engine make sure the timing tab and mark on damper are clean. Chalk or white paint on timing mark on damper may help visibility.
3. Install a jumper wire between the two WHITE leads on the distributor. Use Quicksilver 91-818812A1, or fabricate a jumper wire using a 6 in. (150 mm) section of 16 gauge wire with two male bullet terminal ends connected.
4. Bypass the shift interrupt switch, as follows:
A Disconnect wires at shift interrupt switch.
B Temporarily join the engine harness wires together.
IMPORTANT: Do not fail to reconnect these two wires to the shift interrupt switch when timing procedures are complete.
5. Start engine and run at normal idle speed.
6. Aim timing light at timing tab, located on the timing gear cover and crankshaft torsional damper. Check the timing. Refer to ?Specifications?.
7. Adjust timing by loosening distributor clamp and rotating distributor body as required until timing mark on damper or pulley lines up with the mark on tab specified in ?Specifications.? Tighten clamp and recheck location of timing mark.
8. Aim timing light at timing tab and recheck location of timing mark. Repeat Step 7 until timing is correct.
9. Stop the engine. Torque distributor hold down bolt to 20 lb. ft. (27 N.m).
10. Reconnect the two wires to the shift interrupt switch.
IMPORTANT: Be sure to remove jumper wire before returning engine to service, otherwise timing will not advance.
11. Remove jumper wire at distributor white leads.
12. With timing light still connected, start the engine and run at IDLE. Verify that timing did advance to 12o BTDC, plus or minus 2o. At 2400-2800 RPM maximum (total) advance is obtained and should be 27o BTDC (plus or minus 2o).
13. Stop the engine and remove the timing light.

What you need to do is hidden in the above.

Firstly...run the engine without any jumpers long enough to warm up. This will help big time, since the 3.0L is not 'user friendly' when cold!

Now...use your timing light (nothing jumped, just as normal) and see if you are around the 12 degrees BTDC. If not, put it there. This will get you in the ballpark if the timing was ever done incorrectly.

Then...do the jumper thing on the distributor and the shift switch while the engine is running. You should notice a major drop in RPM's...indicating that you are in timing mode. Now you can set the timing to the specs, and when you reattach the shift switch, and disconnect the white wires at the distributor, you should go back up in RPM's. You made need to reset the idle speed and/or idle mixture, since these may have been changed to correct the incorrect timing.

Happy boating!

I have 12 volts at the coil. I pulled the gray connector and am getting 12.2 volts with the key on from the purple wire, Key off, no volts

OK, back again. I let the engine warm up, moved the distrib to bring me up to 12degrees, then jumped the white wires first then the shift cut off and still died. Since that didn't work, I advanced the idle quite a bit, then adjusted timing (jumpers off) to 12 dgrs again, then tried it and still cut off. I just don't get it.

Now you see why I say start a new thead with your question. You have completely hijacked the original posters question and made it your own.
Even if he did have more questions his question would be lost, or people would not realize who is answering whos question.

You're absolutely right and I apologize to Shane Hawkins. I guess you can see how this thing is driving me nuts..

All that I can guess is that your engine just doesn't want to idle below 700 rpm's.

You might want to set the timing back at 12 degrees, without any jumping, while at normal idle speed and see how this runs on the water. Since this is where you should be while out of base timing mode, and idleing, you can't be that far off. I would look for the timing to advance with an increase in rpm's, and this may take a timing light that can be advanced...since you will quicky run out of timing tab marks (27 degrees BTDC @ 2400-2800).

Good luck!

OK guys, I didn't want to write anymore because like the moderator said, and I apologized for asking too many questions taking away from Shane the original posters question but my last post so all the diagnosis tips don't go in vain this is what I did, I tried everything to get into base timing mode and failed. I just bought a new ignition module 2 days ago. Well I saved the original and thought, what the heck, what do I have to lose when I've tried all else, and put the original back in. Walla!! the engine stayed on while joining the 2 leads from the cut off shift. Now I didn't get base timing mode because the module is defective, but it didn't shut off meaning the new one is bad as well. It must be. So I'm taking it back to the boys at west Marine and seeing if I can exchange it. Thanks to all for your input I learned alot, especially to START my own thread when it's something so i depth. I'll share more once I get a new module, and set the timing and see if the module heats up again. Take care all

No wonder I'm confused reading the threads.
