etec 40-60hp powerhead swap onto older midsection?

does anyone know if its possible to fit an etec 40-60hp twin on an older midsection? i've got a couple options for "older midsections" 1980's and the newer 89' and up ones. i ask because the adapter looks the same, and of course the adapter gasket. i was thinking this would be a great way to use the complete 40hp etec powerhead i have, since the complete midection and lower is missing. i do see the side cowling mounts stick out and would possibly need to be removed, but other than that i dont see an issue.
