Just wondering if Bombardier's ETEC is just another name for OMC's ill fated FICHT with some minor tweaking?

I know when I worked for a company that had a lease program with OMC to power their boats we had a couple of Evinrude 150 FICHTs the last year they were made (2001 I think). They seemed to be good engines as they appeared to have the bugs worked out.

Anyone know?

Search the web, you will find all kinds of information about the E-TEC and the FICHT and how different they are.

You are correct that the FICHT was pretty good in 2001 but the former OMC had quality control problems, mostly with outsourced parts, and that caused grief with many customers. In 2002 Bombardier re-engineered them, tightened up quality, and built a new manufacturing plant. Those motors were and are still great running engines.

E-TEC was introduced at the 2003 Miami Boat Show and has been on a roll since. It is a whole different design, less troublesome parts, and good performance. The best part is that they are super quiet or even quieter than a 4 stroke at different speeds.

go to www.evinrude.com for more info
