Hi. I'm a new member, hopefully buying a used boat this weekend. I made a post in the main forum looking for general O/B and Mechanical questions to ask during a professional inspection I have scheduled for this Thursday morning. At the suggestion of the moderator, I am posting here looking for any advice or questions to ask that are specific to this motor (vs. O/B in general)

It's a 1993 Evinrude 140hp 2-stroke oil injected. Looks clean, has 74 hours on the clock, but current owner has only a year with the boat, and isn't able to give me any mechanical info at all, meaning info that came from the previous owner, and that he hasn't done anything to it in the year that he's owned the boat.

So what are the hallmarks or concerns I should keep in mind with this motor? What questions should I be sure to ask the mechanic during the inspection? I know about compression and water in the crankcase. It will be pushing a 1993 seaswirl striper 205 cuddy.

PS: if you have any general outboard / general mechanical suggestions, please consider posting those to the main forum thread, and keep these replies specific to the Evinrude.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

Gary, Stick with the usual stuff. The compression should be 100PSI+ and within 10% on all cylinders, and the wiring and general appearance of the should motor look good. Do a test run to see that the motor idles acceptably and check the voltmenter for 13.5+ volts to assure the charging system is working. Look at the spark plugs. They should be light brown and have a bit of oil on them.
