CDI Electronics has good information on checking out the ignition components:

Those last two or so years of that model engine put a lot of the ignition up under the
flywheel. Turned out to be a bad move, lots of failures. So if the coils test ok, CDI has
procedures for checking out the ignition. They also sell a conversion that moves the
electronics pack out from under the flywheel.
