evenrude 85 hp V4 engine will not idle

rebuilt carbs,adjusted floats now engine will start and run for a moment then when it starts to die I push in on the key choke and it will keep running as long as I keep doing this any ideas?

Sounds like you slow speed idle jets are restricted. If that motor has needles, open them.<br />If fixed jets, you may have to replace them or clean them out.<br /><br />How exactly did you rebuild the carbs. Did you open the plugged passages and clean out the jets or just replace the needle and seats. <br /><br />It really could be several things. <br /><br />My 1969 needed me to choke the motor to speed up. I adjusted the needles and fixed the problem.

I just replaced the needle,seats and gaskets

Mercrude,Ajp, Is on the right track.If you can bump the primer solenoid and motor settles out ,you most certainly have a fuel delivery problem through idle porting.Possible causes:floats set too low or sticking closed,idle ports restricted,pickup tube in carb bowl restricted,air leak at carb base,idle mix screws out of adjustment.

If I may add, you might check the entire fuel delivery system also.<br /><br />With the cowling off, pump up the bulb hard and hold it that way. Check all connections for drips of gas, and smell, too.<br /><br />A small leak before the fuel pump will let air into the line, instead of gas.<br /><br />A stainless steel hose clamp is relatively cheap.<br /><br />Also check the strainer in the tank. If it's clogged, you won't get much.<br /><br />Good luck!

The guys above are definitely on the right track. I had same problem with my '86 rude V4 this past summer. In my situation, the problem would come and go.<br /><br />Turned out I had an extremely small sliver of plastic stuck in one of my high speed jets. It was almost the exact same shape as the jet opening, so.. when it was vertical, it would block the jet and stop fuel from getting to one cylinder; when it was horizontal, gas would be able to pass through to cylinder. Never have figured out where this little piece of plastic came from.<br /><br />Good luck!

thanks very much for all of you guys help I will most certinly check all of the above till I get this problem solved. I am not a quitter and remember DO NOT SWEAT THE SMALL THINGS IN LIFE.<br />THANKS AGAIN

thanks again guys today we cleaned carbs again this time we dipped them verses cleaning with an aresal can, readjusted floats put on new control box and cables starts great, idles great were going to take it out on lake tomorrow for the true test thanks for everyone that helped

Hey im know expert but a friend told me a leaking crankcase seal will also do this ?
