I just bought a used Evenrude motor that looks like a 40hp. the model numer is 40752E and serial E02598. Can you tell me the year and HP?
Also, it has a bad intermitant miss at full throttle and idles rough. I wanted to start by changing spark plugs. The current plug is a champion J6C. Is this correct and what is the gap supposed to be? Any help is greatly appreciated.

That is a 1967 40hp.

I would start by checking that you are getting fire on both cylinders, and do a compression check. If that check out ok, do a thorough decarb, and maybe clean the carbs, and put some fresh gas in it.

Thank you. Do you know what the compression should be? How about the plug gap. The gas is fresh.

Good compression would be anything over 110 on that motor, with no difference greater than 10%. Im not real sure on the plug gap, but .030 is pretty standard.

Thanks.
Another few questions:

There is a fuel mix hand knob adjustment on the front of the carb, any idea on the number of turns?

Also, the choke adjustment is closer to lean, any ideas there?

Finally, the motor has three settings on the choke, full choke, automatic, and no choke. I understand to choke it when starting, but when running, should it be in automatic or off?

I really appreciate your help.

crank the mixture screw in til it starts to miss, then bring it back out til it smoothes out

I like to manually choke it for 15 seconds, then turn it off - but thats just me, you have to mess around with it til you find what works best

I had an old mc culloch that was rough at idle, took the idle needle out, sprayed berkebile 2 + 2 in there with the little straw they give ya, cleaned up the needle with crocus cloth and berkebile and it was great

but wait to see if anyone says there is a spring in there that might get unsprung in the process

The best and most frequent advice for new owners is to buy a repair manual. There are several pages devoted to carb adjustments.

A link the bottom of this page will take you to where you can get manuals. I like the Clymer, other prefer the Seloc. Either will help you.
