Evenrude 'Starflite 90' steering conversion issue

Well, this all started with a 'free' Fiberform 17' - that's how I got the StarFlite 90...

Now I have another free hull (this one has no rot, but came w/o motor)... Which I am transplanting all the 'stuff' from the FiberForm into (Scrapping said boat, unless someone comes to get it (put it on Craigs))....

The issue?

The Fiberform has a cable-and-pulley steering system (cable runs down both sides of the boat, through a pulley on each side of the attachment plate, and back to the hull, where it hooks to an eyelet on each side)... Which works just great with the motor...

The new hull (Marlin 17') has Teleflex 'Safe-T' single-cable steering system that I can't figure out how to connect to my motor...

Looks something like this:

In that the part shown on the left-bottom (a tube with a pushrod inside, and a round threaded 'cap' on the end that screws into 'something') is what's supposed to steer the boat...

But my motor doesn't have any way to attach that setup... Is there something (parts, brackets, etc) that I'm missing here?

P.S. The cable comes through a (slightly torn up) rubber boot mounted to the side of the splash-well)

Ok...

So what do I do about holding the teleflex in place?

This is an older (late 60s) motor, and there's no place/tube to screw the end-cap on the teleflex into (part that holds it all in place so that it can move the boat motor)...

The motor is designed for a cable-and-pulley steering system, from what I can see... Not a push-pull-cable (Which is what I have/am trying to hook it up to)

you may need to go to the junk yard and get the tube. I am not completely up to date on steering so someone else may be able to guide you. I would think the right size iron pipe threaded for you cable would work bolted to the transom with u bolts.

Dave give us a couple of pictures of your transom and motor set up. so we can help you get the correct parts.

you can up load to a free service like photobucket.com then you choose the pictures you want( clik the little box at the bottom left of the picture) scrool to the bottom of the page, clik generate html, it will take you to the next page, scroll down to thumb nails clik on that and copy, then insert it into your post.

also if you are planing on posting pictures, you can use the Blue post reply or the go advanced, manage attachments, there you can upload , directly from your computer. besure you pictures have been resized to fit the format. 640x480 max.

Dave, The cable at the motor end is bolted to the splashwell with a standard cable mount and ball joint. If you look in the steering section of the Discount marine stores or on the Teleflex site, you will find the necessary hardware.

BTW that motor is a bit powerful for the old cable/pulley system, so your idea to replace it is a good one.

I'm scrapping out the old boat with the cable/pulley system due to transom rot... Got a new-used (free) hull that came with the new 'Zero Feedback' style steering...

I'm starting to figure out how this all works - there's supposed to be a link that goes from the cable-pushrod to the engine... The cable either goes into a splashwell ball-joint, or into a tube that's either part of the engine mount or bolted to the transom using the motor mounting bolts....
