I was thinking of buying a new E-tec for my Thundercraft project boat. I have never bought a new outboard. I am pretty clear on all the technical issues involved in rigging the new engine, (shaft length, props, general install). I need advice on the purchasing process. I know I will need to finance a good portion of it, I was thinking of putting about $1200+/- down and financing the balance. Does Evinrude do its own financing? Will dealers allow me to do the rigging or is warrantee an issue? What do you guys think of the new e-tec engines?
I really like the e-tec CAN system. I work with multiplex electrical systems in my job and I understand the benefits. I was hoping to get a complete setup including the gauges and controls. I was hoping to hold the investment down to around $8-$10k, you think I can get it done for that in 90 horse power? Does the marine aftermarket have compatible gauges?

Financing may be available through a dealer. The dealer will have to do the rigging and you'll be glad you didn't ... it's required by BRP. The first thing you will need to do is find a really good dealer with excellent techs, if you want an E-Tec. Your budget may be a little on the skinny side, but let a dealer tell you the pricing.

You don't have to buy the instruments from a BRP dealer, but an alarm module is a mandatory minimum. I have two E-Tec 175's that I've had for three years, and they are the best motors I've ever owned. Mine were rigged with alarm modules, plus Teleflex temp and water pressure gauges and an existing FloScan digital fuel management device. The dealer did all of the connections, but I made the insert panel for all of the gauges. You can save some money by considering the Lowrance LMF400 series gauges.

Make sure the dealer is responsible for correctly propping the motor ... E-Tec's generally need a pitch or two lower (2 to 4") than you might expect to get to the right RPM @ WOT.

Make sure the motor is set for XD100 oil and use nothing else. If your boat will handle it, I would consider the 115.
