Been crabbing, last trip out two weeks ago the floor got wet with sea water, when I got home I hosed it out and all.. Its been crappy weather here for two weeks so Ive uncovered it in the sun, but tarped it in the rain, getting green moss in there in a couple spots. The floor was bone dry prior to this, any idea's on getting it out of there? The carpet is coming out in the next month to rhino line the thing anyway, I want it waterproof, so should I just not worry about it? Any tips to dry it out? Dont want to rot the wood. Stupid carpet inside a boat....

Thanks

Moss? No. Mushrooms? Yes. My plan is this. I'm going to rip out the carpet and evaluate the wood. If the wood is in decent condition, I plan to leave it. I'll seal it with water seal and then cover it with a layer of resin. This will coat, protect, and secure the wood underneath. I'm not sold on re-carpeting. I'm thinking I'll use vinyl. Water will drain better and evaporate faster. And there's less chance of turning it into a floating greenhouse. If the wood is rotted, I'll replace it and then follow the same proceedure. That's my plan anyway. I figure that will keep the mushrooms in the right place. :)

If your floor was bone dry and you now have moss, you may have more problems than you realize. (FRP) Fiberglass and gel coat are semi permeable. Heating and cooling (days and nights) can create condensation which will leech through to the top side of the floor of your boat exacerbated by water trapped in the hull. This condensation is more than enough to grow all sorts nondescript life. I don't think I'd cover it all up before investigating

yep - had a mushroom grow in the carpeted locker of our Sea Ray. Floor was rotted too.

No real cure for rot but to replace it. Sounds like you're headed that way anyway.

Vowed in my next boat - no carpet. It was one of the major attractions of the Scout. After a day with kiddies scattering chip crumbs, sand, and other assorted crap - a few bucketfuls of water out the scuppers and that nonskid is all good. :D

I will say nonskid can be hard on the tootsies after a while so I usually boat wearing crocs.

It's my personal belief that anything with a carpeted cockpit does not constitute a boat. Especially a boat designed to be used in water. WTH were the manufacturers thinking when they designed 'boats' like that???

I'd skip that water seal step. That stuff is often wax. That will kill your resin bond.

I love my marine vinyl deck.
