Everyone likes to watch the folies at the boat ramp.

In years past, it even became a place where all the Harley Chopper/Biker undesirable types would hang out and watch the 'goings on'.

As one thing leads to another, the bikers finally got to be a problem.

Not only would they watch, but eventually they'd (loudly) offer free comments on your boat, your truck, your wife,,, etc.... and as they got more and more drunk, and smoked more, and more of that narcotic.

As you'd guess,
the later on in the day it was, and the drunker they got, the less, and less 'complimentary' the comments became.

I figured out a way to stop the non-sense when I was launching my old, and just buttt ugly, (1958) 19' Lone Star day cruiser back in them days.

We'd back the boat down, then stop.

When I was in the boat, and almost ready to slide it off the trailer.......

That's about the time you'd hear the nasty comments begin,,,,,,,,

That's also when I'd yell to my fishing buddy driveng the tow vehicle,

"STOP!!, STOP!!", I'd yell... along with the appropriate hand waving.

(as pre-arranged, he'd slow & stop in the middle of the ramp)

After he stopped, opened the truck door and hollereed, "What"?

I'd go on and say, "I got Browning automatic here,,, but I don't see the bait, my .357, our extra 1,000 rounds of ammo, or your Winchester!!".

It'd get real quite over in the 'peanut gallery'.

When we tied up the more or less deserted ramp, as we were passing (empty) ammo cans from the truck to the boat, folded towels, extra clothes, coolers, etc...

It took about a minute of subdued conversation before you heard a few dozen HUGE! HUGE!! air cooled, V-twin motorcycles crank up, and head out of the parking lot headed towards the nearby 'on-ramp' for Interstate 35.

S/F,
Ed.

And dog-gonn-it,
as much as I like crossing the country on 2 wheels, having ridden in and out of 26 states, plus the Eastern Seaboard of the US.. Putting a total of over 100,000 miles on 3 motorcycles, and paying to keep the 'Motorcycle Also' provision on my driver's licence for over 30 years, I really felt bad about treating fellow bikers like that.

But then again,
I'd tell them guys the same thing I tell my kids, "If you act like a "Transom",,, don't be surprised when people treat you like the 'effluent' that they pay to get sucked out of their boat's 'holding tank'.

I've been riding for over 20 years, but I have no sympathy for biker trash. What's up with the marina allowing that BS to go on?

Here we have lots of state parks with just loading ramp & parking lots that get (sort of) patroled by local Police. If and when they come through, if there's nothing bad going on, they just cruise on out.

Do you know the difference between a Hoover vacuum cleaner and a Harley rider?

On a Hoover the dirt bag rides on the inside.

Sorry HD riders, just a joke I heared. :D

My 2 cents.

Hey, I ride vintage yamahas. I get sick of the 'biker for a weekend' types and the dirt bags on HDs. Buy a real bike, not a name....

Well, I ride as well, and good for you Winger Ed. They deserve the imtimidation they heard from you.
Just because people ride harleys, does not mean they are above all else.
Keep up the good work W.E.

I ride too Ed-and a few of my friends are members of a "unorthodox worldwide biker organisation" (I'm not!). Funnily enough, neither myself or them feel the need to act in this way. It's usually only the wannabees with the "concubitus omnipotens" attitude that seem to have that kind of attitude problem. It goes along with having a small p*nis I guess.
Good for you Ed- hope you scared them shiftless.... :)

I ride too, a HD and sometime I heard people say that We are the HD wannabe because we, the baby boomer, are not hardcore riders like those you see in the movies with long hair et al... I enjoy riding a 2 wheeler and happens that I like a HD and I am helping the economy.
There are a bunch of people doing the same thing my friends and I are doing, and they enjoy what they are doing, that is why we live in a country call "AMERICA" freedom of choice.

As we all know there is going to be a few rotten apples in the basket and they are the one who gives us, motorcycle riders, a bad name by their idiotic actions.

In all most of todays rider are the baby boomers and yuppy!!

I do not mean to offend any motorcycle rider, and especially beezee28, but I agree with imstillatwork. Most of the people I see with HD's are very arrogant, ignorant and clueless. To be fair, my BIL, who is a good fellow, rides a HD. I would personally NEVER own one. I'll ride a bike with current technology thank you.
What I mean by my comments about HD riders is most riders will wave as you ride past them, HD riders around here are too stuck up. Most of the HD riders around here also ride with either no headlight on (required by law in MI) or those stupid extra lights beside the headlight. Also the one hand on the throttle and the other on your thigh is just plain stupid, and I see other brand riders do it too. I see most HD riders use no turn signals, and just in general use absolutely no common sense when riding. Riding a motorcycle is dangerous enough when you do everything right, let alone when you forsake simple safety procedures. My BIL agrees that a lot of the local HD riders are just plain stupid when on their manhood compensators.
So, if riding a HD means I have to act this way, I'll walk first. Instead I ride my Susuckme, I mean Suzuki. It's small, ugly, but it's two wheels and 50mpg. Plus the chicks dig bikes and bikers, too bad I'm married.
:( or :) ?

I rode Yamahas back when I was traveling too.

The Harleys of the day couldnt' be trusted to go around the corner to fill their gas tanks. The Hondas seemed to be made for people about 4' tall.

I tried their 750s, the new Gold Wings, etc. and always felt like my knees would rub a raw spot on my chin before I got to the nearest state line.

I had a crashed and worn out '72 Yamaha 650(for awhile), then bought a new '74 650 Yamaha twin that fall, and put about 30,000 miles on it. They weren't bad. But when the shaft drive 750 triple was offered in '76--- I grabbed one. I paid $1,000 down-with my trade in,,, and financed the other $1000 for a year. I put over 40,000 miles on that bike in 2 years without a 'brake down',,, it always got me home--- even if 'home' was more than 1,000 miles away.

I'd seen a old '71 model triple in Japan when I was there in '76, that's when the American market was only offered a few counterbalanced 750 twins for the '72-73 production year. Then no 750 at all until Aug of '76 when the triple got delivered here.

A few monthls after the '78s hit the street, In Dec. of 77, I got a 'left in stock' '77 model 750 triple. The only difference was the color, and the breaker points instead of electronic ignition.

Me being 6' tall, the distance from the seat to the handelbars, and the pegs was all was at a comfortable angle. With my delicate transom sitting on it for 30 hours at a time on ocassion---- that was important.

Gosh was that a great bike.

One time in Wash. DC, while getting on the freeway- I found out it'd do 70mph in 2nd gear, then pull the front wheel up in the air going into 3rd......... which was a hard thing to do since as the power came on, the drive shaft tried to climb up the rear wheel's ring gear, causing the whole machine to lift straight up rather than 'wheelie' the way a 'chain drive' motorbike does.

Re: Ever have a biker gang harass you on the ramp?

First of all, I'll call BS on the original poster. I don't know any gang that would be scared enough to run, most likely they would attack for that kind of dis-respect.

Second, on the 'Bad HD' comments,
I have a high-tech, modern totally computer designed engine that has one of the worlds first oil spray cooling system for the pistons. The computer controlled fuel injection system is first rate and never has missed a beat in 4 years. The engine is absolutly oil-tight and has never needes any service. The Kevlar-composite drive belt is revolutionary and the air-assisted suspension keeps me comfortable mile after mile.....

Yes, I do own a Harley, suprised?

'buy new tech, not a name' Learn what you are talking about before opening your ignorant mouth.

Re: Ever have a biker gang harass you on the ramp?

i can say that on long island we got a pagan/hells angles problem but they mostly just shoot each other ;)

New York - One person was killed and 10 injured as sparring motorcycle gangs - the notorious Hell's Angels and their bitter rivals the Pagans - clashed in the New York suburb of Long Island late on Saturday, police said.

Four people were shot and at least two were stabbed when "a sizeable number of Pagans" turned up at a tattoo show and swap meet organised by the Hell's Angels.

"It's been a long-standing feud between motorcycle gangs. It erupted today," said Herb Faust, police chief in Nassau County, where the melee erupted.

"There was a major conflict - gunshots, people stabbed, a major fight," he said.

Police arrested 60 people and confiscated three handguns, one Uzi machine gun, several daggers, baseball bats and other weapons, as well as 13 vans.

The Hellraiser Ball Bike and Tattoo Expo - a two-day indoor event which began on Saturday in Plainview, just outside New York City - was attended by more than 1 000 gang members and biking enthusiasts who were buying and selling motorcycle parts.

Authorities were unable to say how the clash started but eventually guns were fired and knifeblades flashed. One unidentified man was stabbed repeatedly and then shot, dying late on Saturday from his injuries.

"It was pandemonium. Absolute pandemonium," said a leather-jacketed woman who attended the expo with her boyfriend, who was injured in the riot.

Police estimated the number of Pagans at fewer than 100.

Some 100 police officers were called to the scene, authorities said. - Sapa-AFP
its no fun at all when your at a rally and they show up they seem to feed off makeing you afraid and i can tell you you pull a gun you better be ready to use it or eat it

tommays

There's a trick to it.

You need to know alot about human nature. That will get you out of many, more or less dangerous situations, or avoid actions & consequences that will involve a lot of time and money to unwind... a few of which are darn hard to live with afterwards.

For example:
If someone is confronted directly, or at close quarters, they will almost always react like a trapped or cornered rat, and be 'all teeth' at (what they feel is) a threatening confrontation.

However,
If you have several yards, 20-30 is plenty, seperating the 2 of you, and the other person sees a honorable way to escape-for lack of a better word,,,, or can just ease off and move along as the case may be, they usually will.....

Especially if you are willing to listen to a little 'trash talk' as you watch them go without pulling the trigger of a 'cocked & locked' 12 guage pump shotgun, that you are already holding.

If I was on sitting on my bike with a dozen of my friends, late at night, pretty much in the middle of nowhere, about 10 years before anyone knew what a 'cell phone' was, just haveing a few beers, 20-odd yards away from 2 'bubbas' with (presumably)loaded shotguns-already in hand....

And one or two of my friends made a point to insult them, Darn,,,, I'd look for a way out of that situation myself before I tried to cross that much ground to reach them or try to draw and fire a pistol from that distance and risk about a 80% chance of being blown out of my socks first.

I'd expect nothing else from anyone.
In that case, everybody won. Nobody got their feelings hurt too bad, or arrested, and nobody got shot.

But at least I have some knowledge about what I write.

Apparently your bias runs deep. Possibly it's jealousy, I don't know.

(Thanks for the personal attack, I hope to return the favor some day.)

so, the bits that work and don't leak...were they built in Japan? :p

Shall I tell you about my Honda? How it's won prizes at custom bike shows and in 5 years never broken down or needed any mechanical work? It's 17 years old, still doesn't leak and will hit 160mph...

We expect that from Jap bikes... Why do Hog owners feel the need to shout about how they are almost getting as good a deal as the Jap owners-and at twice the price too! :p :p :p

BTW, I'm not anti-HD. I simply haven't got the money for the 2 litre S&S engined beast I want!
