Sigh...

I got the boat all ready to start a while back with a rebuilt out drive, and some other work that I've been doing on a project boat I found real cheap, well I start it, its great... takes a little cranking to turn it over but it eventually fires up, runs for a minute, then a core plug pops and waters draining into my bilge. Fine... pull the outdrive, support the motor with a jack, pull off the motor mount to get to the plug hole, replace the core plug, get everything back together, start her up... runs great... then POW, blows the core plug behind the other motor mount :(

I guess Ill be working on the boat again today in hopes that I can have it ready by Sunday! When will it end! lol

How is it possible to build enough pressure to force the plugs out?

Whoaaa! What a pain! Lots of folks here have been there and done that and can feel your pain. Thanks for sharing your story makes some of my recent engine frustrations small potatoes. Just gotta keep thinking of how great it will be when everything comes together...priceless!
Best of luck!

That's what I'm thinking - especially if it's raw water cooled.

Blown head gasket to a coolant port coupled with a rust clogged exhaust system.

Re: Ever just wish you could stop chasing problems?

Shoulda clarified by saying "popping" a plug just meant i saw water leaking from it... its not like it blew out lol. I bought this boat over the winter, and I dont think it was winterized... Im hoping for the best as i have started it, and it runs good... and still no water in the oil even with water running through it for the short time that it has. I got the other motor mount off after i got to take the drive off AGAIN. Now gotta go get the new plug and put it on there, put everything back together, and hope to have it started and running with no issues by dark :)

I would keep a very close eye on the oil level and condition. I see milky oil coming next.

Are the plugs brass? Or are they automotive steel, and rusting?

They're brass

And Don, I have kept my eye on the oil ever since I began this project. So far so good, so as far as milky oil, I sure hope not... cause that my friend, would be a "bummer" lol

Did you use sealant when installing them, say permatex 2, etc?

Sure did!

Hit em straight on, etc.

Oh, and I just went and started it, let it run for a while... and no more core plug leaks :) I checked the oil, let it get up to operating temp, run a while longer, checked the oil again, and kept checking the oil. Oil level hasnt risen at all, and it looks like clean fresh oil... no chocolate milk for my motor (yet... keeping fingers crossed)

Oh god what a glorious feeling this is. I've been workin on this thing since February when it got to 40* outside :) Just in time for memorial day weekend!
