Re: Ever left truck running and locked up?

I use to own a Toyota Hiace 1 ton truck.
I also had a West Highland Terrier called Fergus.
Fergus use to travel with me a bit.
Jumped out one day, motor running as usual, closed the door, and Fergus jumped up and depressed the lock pin.
So Fergus is on the inside, me on the out.
Got the aerial (which incidentally was a wire coat-hanger) and tried that......but Fergus goes ape-shxt and tackles the wire as it moves down the inside of the window....so that wasn't going to work, without removing some of Fergus's teeth.
Then it occurs to me, force open the little triangular window in front of the main window....that's how old the truck was.
It did work, but it is a long stretch to get your arm all the way back to the lock pin, and Fergus is attacking my arm all the way.
I release that pin, pull my arm out, and Fergus jumps up and locks it again.
In goes the arm again, "smack" Fergus catches one in the head, yelps and goes straight to the floor to hide.
Fergus still travelled with me for years....everytime I got out, he went straight ot the floor.....then i use to have to drag him out by the scruff of the neck.
Cheers
Phillip

I always keep a spare key to my tow vehicle in my boats glove box and a spare key to my boat in the glove box of my tow vehicle. Murphy likes to follow me around alot:D

not a boat ramp story, but I was picking up a guy for work for 6:45 sharp he calls me and says he's comming up the street now (it's about 6:55 he late), cruises up the street to find a spot, Parks it and jumps in the van, off to work we go, Around 4:30 I drop him off, and it's still running, The neighbors called the cops as later I found out they went by his house.I'm surprised they didn't tow it but then again he wasn't doing anything wrong

Re: Ever left truck running and locked up?

Lots of trucks these days have automatic door locks that kick in when the vehicle is put into drive or reach 5 mph, and they don't unlock until the shift selector is put back into Park.

My 2004 F-150 has that feature. Instructions in the manual on how to override and disable that feature. I hated all my doors locking without my input to do so.

Also, I always have driver's window down when launch or loading. Safety feature and peace of mind.

Capt Mel is very well known in these parts. He tells a story about letting his wife back the trailer up so he could "drive" his boat off. For some reason she thought she could help and got out of the car. Unfortunately, she had slammed the door shut and locked it with the keys in the ignition and the engine running. There was a pretty good line of folks at that "one at a time only" ramp, and I guess the locksmith was a welcomed site some two hours later. Happens to the best Capt.

Seems pretty common. I keep a spare flat key in my wallet as well.

Also of note, mid-late 90's gm trucks, you can open with any gm truck key and a little wiggling. All of our work trucks were like this...good for practical jokes on co-workers too.

My truck WILL NOT allow you to lock it with the keys in the ignition. No way.

A nice feature, I think.

Your window should be down when backing a trailer anyway. :D A hide-a-key isn't a bad idea for those other times when your window might not be down... I keep meaning to get one. :D

Re: Ever left truck running and locked up?

I normally role my windows down when launching or loading the boat. I usually launch at a private ramp so I wouldn't be blocking ramp traffic if for some reason something like that happened.

Not a locked out at the ramp story but my father and I were at my uncle's place out back (way out back). My german shepard wanna be followed us up to the uncle's place and little did we know another relative's bigger dog was up there and started pestering my dog, so I put my dog in my 2006 F150 that I had the remote locks added to it. I had the keys laying on the seat and windows up, well the dog must have stepped on the remote and locked the doors. I caught a ride with my uncle, he dropped me by the house (while on his way to go fishing), I grabbed the spare key/remote that I had at the time (that my mother lost recently) and jumped on the 4 wheeler and headed back up. By the time I got back up to the truck my father had a piece of a power line nearly hooked on to the door handle inside the cab. I found it funny because he thought he unlocked the truck with his method but I unlocked the truck with the remote as soon as I got close to my truck.

Re: Ever left truck running and locked up?

I did this once with a friends truck I borrowed. I went to refuel it before returning it. It's a '95 Dodge which after owning one subsequently, I can tell you it's not hard to hit the lock with your elbow while getting out. Anyway, I got out, refueled it, went to climb in and discovered I locked myself out. It took me three hours to get a hold of him. Of course, the truck was sitting at the pump running the whole time. He eventually came, opened the unlocked tool box in the bed and got the spare key.
