Re: Ever put your car in a moving truck?

How much furniture do you have? A 26' box does not leave a lot of room for furniture with a truck in the box as well. You will need room between the truck and any furniture and the walls of the box as the truck will move a little as you are driving. If it does fit you will have to be very careful the load does not move and fall on the truck. Load the truck with as much stuff as you can before you put it in the truck. In Alberta we are allowed to tow the Truck with the boat being towed behind it. Yes,all 3 at one time. You don't see it very often but it is legal here.

Your allowed to haul doubles here in WA to as long as the first trailer is setup with a proper hitch. You usually see this with with 5th wheel motorhomes and either a boat or utility trailer behind the 5th wheel motorhome.

Thats about right for a moving vehicle 4-6mph unless u get a deisel than its closer to 8 depending what kind of accelerator u are.

Our semi runs around 5-6mpg

Re: Ever put your car in a moving truck?

Thanks for all of the help and ideas folks. I am still undecided if I should spend the extra $600 for a commercial mover. I have always heard horror stories about moving companies wit their extra fees if the walk from the truck to your house is too far or holding your furniture hostage. That is why I am leaning toward moving myself. I am sure if I use a reputable company, I should not have any problems.

I am a single guy so I don't have much furniture so the 26' truck would be more than enough. Call m weird, but I think putting a car in the back of the truck would be kinda fun! Thanks again.

Kind of fun till you kill someone. Ask your insurance company, or the company that you are renting the truck from what their thoughts on the matter are. ;)

Having done it, no its not fun. In fact, its a major pain in the behind. If you can figure out another way to get the SUV moved, I strongly recommend it.

BTW, if you are worried about the discount movers but feel that you can afford them, why not do the move yourself and fly back to get the SUV? In the long run, the money would be about the same.

The people that lived next door to me moved to Ky, they call a local freight line, rented a portion of a trailer for a small fee, trailer was dropped in driveway, they loaded, called freight line picked up and delivered to the new house at a set date, they unloaded and freight line removed trailer, they drove the personal vehicles. The cost was much less than any other option.

I moved some folks to California from NC with a 53 ft trailer.
We had all the household items in the front and her new Toyota Camry in the back.
You have to think of the bouncing and rubbing everything inside the truck does when going down the road.
The car will bounce and walk sideways if not ratchet strapped with 4 big straps in a crossed pattern. Two in front and two in the rear hooked to the frame of the vehicle.
I know these rental trucks do not have the big D-ring tie downs in the floor.

I had them installed in the 53 ft trailer just for that move.
We still had a few pieces of furniture that got against the front of the car..:(

if you check your rental agreement for the truck it is against their policy. it is illegal to have a vehicle containing oil/gas/or batt fluid in a closed vehicle due to vapor build up. That is why shippers make you drain them before shipping.
if you don't tie it down very securely it is coming out of the truck when you don't want it to or at least banging around on the walls. The e brake does nothing while hauling it. The suspension will bounce and allow the car to walk where it wants to go.
find a friend to drive your SUV pulling the boat or take two trips.

many truck rental places do not officially allow you to pull your own trailer either. Not a big deal many people do it. However be forewarned that should the tranny go out (or anything else) on the highway while your pulling your boat, when they show up to get the truck and give you a replacement you will recieve a bill for their transmission due to you overloading it with a trailer. Just a thought.

Wrong, if that where the case, how come many of us own enclosed trailers?

Have a link?

I stand corrected, my bad semantics is showing. Not illegal just against the rental policy due to their insurance. Why because of vapor build up within an enclosed trailer.
why do those of us with enclosed trailers do it? because we own the trailer, we have the insurance, and we take our own risks. what does it smell like in there on a nice hot day?

how did this help the original poster?

Maybe try and be a bit more clear.

I ALSO said to check with them, regardless of WHY they make it against their rental policy, the OP should not do it.

Talk about semantics.

p.s. my trailer doesn't smell like gas inside when I haul any of my vehicles, you might want to check for a leak.

There is more rubbing then you could ever imagine going on in the back of those trucks.

Ahh, the memories of my truck and my girl in the late afternoon parked in the dunes of the beach..

Re: Ever put your car in a moving truck?

how far are you moving? what year is the 4 runner? is it new enough to make it worth it?

my two thoughts are (as alreadey stated) hook the boat to the 4 runner and have a buddy drive it

or

sell the 4runner, hook the boat to the moving truck and buy a new truck after the move.

Re: Ever put your car in a moving truck?

Thanks for everyone's help. Too much of a hassle to stick the 4Runner in the truck, plus too many potential problems. I would love to sell the 4Runner, but I probably don't have enough time before the move. I bought it with the paint in not so great condition. Lots of rub marks on the exterior and little knicks. Anyways, I am going to hire a moving company. I checked in to having trucking companies move everything, but they were only a couple hundred short of a full service mover and I would have to load and wrap everything myself. Now I just need to pick the right one. They all seem to be fighting for my business, so I may begin a bidding war. Several have dropped their price a couple times in the last week. The only bad part is they each call me almost everyday! Thanks again.
