Re: Everyone please do me a quick favor!

Mechanic yesterday said he didn't think it was the LU or the prop. He said if compression was good it sounded like it might be some sort of timing belt above the distributor. What is this, and can I check it myself or should I take it to him?

Since this started after you hit something, it doesn't seem impossible that your timing belt jumped a tooth. Clams may be able to help with this diagnosis also.

Look in your manual and see if there is a procedure for checking the timing without the motor running. There are also several posts on this board about how to check timing.

Cool, getting excited that I might be at the end of this problem. That was the mechanic's thoughts also. He said, "I think the lower unit should be okay, and if it's stalling out, you probably burned a hole in the 3rd piston." (or something like that) I told him I have good compression so that the pistons should be fine right? He said, "okay if it stalls when you put it in drive but it idles okay, its probably the timing chain/belt just above the distributor. Bring it in and I can check it out." I can take it in but I want to put it back together first so I will be waiting on a new water pump kit...At least he sounds to know quite a bit about these older motors!!
