Howdy, I gotta 78 Evinrude 85 horse. model 85895. After winterizing it I noticed that I had lower gear lube slowly dripping out through the exhaust on the prop. It was perfectly black in color (I assume no water in lower gear then) The engine was tilted as far back to the boat as possible to fit into the garage better. It stopped doing it when I made the skeg parallel with the ground.

Im sorta new to this whole outboard thing. Any ideas that could help?

It is unlikely that the oil is gear lube, and most likely that it is unburned oil from the engine.

It is quite normal for it to be there.

Agree with ezeke. The color is the give away.

Go to FAQ's and look up "decarb".

It will add years to your engine.

All of the time that you are running the motor, most of the exhaust is traveling down the midsection and exiting out through the center of the propeller. Two strokes are self draining, and everything in the engine and down keeps flowing downward. The colder and slower the engine runs, the more oil will be left to drip. The black color is just carbon.

So, if the motor has been run on muffs, or running slowly as in trolling, the sludge will be heavier.

Changing thermostats, decarbing regularly, and running with synthetic TCW-3 oils can help.

One of the best benefits of synthetic oils is that they have a higher heat range and therefore will not burn as soon, therefore producing less carbon at higher operating temperature.
