My 1985 motor idels ok but starts knocking or missing at higher throttle settings. I ran sea foam through it and changed the plugs.

A new retainer & link assembly was added and the adjustment screw was adjusted to about where the other one was.

Could this be the problem? It didn't do this before. Thanks.

"knocking or missing" is a little ambiguous since each of those describe 2 entirely different symptoms. If it's knocking, that's could be a serious internal engine problem. If it's just missing, that's most probably a "tune-up" type issue.

Knocking:: do you mean the sound of metal parts banging together or the ping sound of a motor out of time?
Retainer and link if it has to do with the ignition it is probably out of time and you will need a manual to adjust it.

BB & SS,

The motor sounds ok running at fast idle but when reved up it cuts out and wants to die. It is in neutal in a water barrel. When reducing the throttle and reving down, it sounds like a light knocking, but I don't think it is anything serious.

As for the the throttle rod and the mark that lines up with the roller on the cam, and not using a clip and wire to note throttle movement, they seem to work about right.

Does it sound like a timing problem?

See if it responds to a little choke as you increase the throttle.
