Here is the story. I was in search of a motor for my boat and came across someone selling a 150 Evinrude 1988. This motor was sitting on the side of his house for how knows how long. Me not knowing the overall condition of the motor I brought along my comprssion tester to check the cylinders as the powerhead is my biggest concern as this is one of the most costly items to replace/fix. So the compression was an even 100 on all 6 cylinders, i think one cylinder may have been 101. So with those readings i purchased the motor.
After hanging and bolting up the motor I did not even attempt to start it. I pulled all 3 carps off, took apart and cleaned them. Replaced all 6 plugs, dropped the lower unit to replace the waterpump/impeller assembly, changed the fluid in the lower unit and put it all back together.
Since I hear so much bad out of the VRO system I decided not to use it. I will run the premix just like my other motor. So I just connected the gas line to the engine and left the oil line off. I disconnected the 3 wire harness coming off of the VRO pump under the hood.
So now its time to keep my fingers crossed and power her up. She took a little bit to get going but she turned over. Was running a little rough and at a high RPM so I shut it down and kept playing with my teleflex adjustments, along with the linkage adjustments and so on. So now she starts but I just cant seem to get it right. She seems to idle on the low side and want to stall and usually does, when I kick up the throttle a little bit using the adjustments, the slightest turn will make it race to much and it is still a rough idle. The motor seems to be smoking alot as I am assuming that there may be left over oil in the injection system. I know I was having issues with it starting but when I turned the red switch on the primer/choke, it would start right up but it would start popping at the exhaust and sound like it was misfiring untill I flipped the red switch back and the popping stoped with the motor still having a rough idle.
So my question is, is there anything you can think of to help make it idle smoother, did I disconnect the wrong harness? I have the Seloc manual but it wasent much of help as this website would be. Any suggestions on what to check?
Thank you,
Jeremy
