Evinrude 100293R Worked Great on land and died on the ramp

Hello All,

I am new to boating and to the forum. I have a 1972 Evinrude 100 Hp 100293R model engine that has been giving me some interesting issues.

Yesterday I took the boat out for the first time and started up the motor on land while running cooling water through it. The engine was working very well and idling like a dream for a 2 cycle (loud though).

After figuring out the choke release mechanism on the control box (flip switch under the key that controls a solenoid on the engine) i decided to put the boat in some water to test the engine's forward and reverse. When I got the boat down and into the water (still on the trailer) I warmed up the engine and started playing with the buttons(forward, reverse, Neutral) on the control box.

The motor was shifting into forward and reverse with relative ease, but when I went to launch the boat it would not shift into reverse and instead was stuck in forward (hard to launch a boat when it wants to get back on the trailer :facepalm).

So I turned the engine off, but after turning it off I was not able to get it to turn back on. By that I mean it would not do anything, almost like it had absolutely no power. It would not crank when the key was turned and the solenoid to control the choke would not do anything either (which was working before on land). I could however raise and lower the engine which tells me that my brand new battery was still doing its job. When I got the boat back home I tested the battery and it was giving 12.82 volts.

I would like to start troubleshooting the engine but I am a little lost where I should begin looking. Any ideas?

That engine may have two sets of cables to the battery. One set for the trim or tilt mechanism, the other set for the engine itself. Both of these systems have a small 20 amp fuse. Likely the engine fuse has blown for some reason. That engine has an electric shift lower unit. If the electric to the lower unit fails for any reason, the engine gearbox will fail in the forward gear-so that you can get home if out on the water. You may have a short of some kind in the engine wiring, perhaps in the shift part of the wiring-which would include the control box. A blown engine fuse would completely disable the engine, including the starter and choke.

look at the back of the engine. there should be three wires that look like they go down through the log to the foot. they should have a connection spot on them where you can disconnect these three wires. disconnect them all three and try starting the engine.. if it starts then you know its in the shifting mechanism in the foot..

Thank you very much for the reply I will check the fuses and see if they have blown. If so I will begin trying to figure out what might be causing that to happen. i think i remeber seeing the fuse holder when I had the cover off, are these fuses the glass 'tube' style fuses with the metal contacts on either side?

The boat is stored about 20 min away from me so I try to bring what I need along so I dont have to run all over town.

Thanks for the info, I will take a look at the boat next time I have a chance and try that when I am checking the fuses. I am guessing these wires are what control the Solenoids in the lower end? I have read a couple of forums that talk about checking voltages to the solenoids but if one is failing/sticking it probably wont matter what type of voltage is going into them.

I will try taking a few photos and begin documenting what I do to troubleshoot.

Yes, the fuses are 20 amp glass fuses. They are not typical fuses, tho-they are really short.
