Good AM. When I pump my fuel line bulb to start my engine I noticed some fuel coming out the front of the carbs and leaking down. Is this a float problem? I rebuilt the carbs and am having doubts about my work.Motor runs alright but has not been fine tuned yet. I would like to settle this issue before moving on.

Thanks You all for your anticipated replies.

Sounds like a float level or float needle problem to me, w2much. If it is happening with both carbs the float level seems more likely.

JB, Thanks . These carbs were recently rebuilt by me, a rookie of sorts. Would you suggest pulling the carbs off and readjusting the float level. They both leak about the same amount of fuel( enough to be concerned about). I did put in new floats at the time of the rebuild.

w2much,

We all are rookies at some point.!Years ago I changed the oil on the wife's new Tercel wagon.Well I pulled the plug out .... well it was the transaxle.

Pull the carbs, replace both needle and seats.Be sure you install the almost clear nylon washer with the new seat.Turn the carb upside down and adjust the float so it is level with the carb body.Be sure you don't put pressure on the needle when adjusting.

That should work.

DHP

two new valve and seats should cost about $10.00,
good insurance. You don't need to buy a whole carb kit.

DHP, Both needles and seat were replaced when I rebuilt the carbs. (only a few months ago, The motor is an ongoing project which has had no use only run at testing time as I slowly diagnose and correct problems as I detect them.).

Motor was given to me after years of sitting.Turning out to be one of the most expensive free gifts I have received. Can't wait to bolt it onto a hull so that I can at least be throwing my money into a hole in the water. Its has and continues to be a fun learning project Thanks to all of you within the iboats forums.

I am hoping to just readjust the floats although I will check the valve and seat and replace if neccessary.

While you have the carb upside down, blow into the fuel inlet fitting. If air passes through it the needle and seat are not working properly.

Re: Evinrude 110 HP 1988 Carb fuel coming out the front

Upon running the engine over the weekend I came to notice that it will stall when left at an idle for a while. It will then be difficult to start, but will after a few minutes. Smokes quite a bit, seems like excessive black gunk in the tank(unburned fuel?). Using a heck of a lot of fuel for just running in a barrel.

Does all of this plus the above mentioned all lead to the floats and needle valves.?

Trying to gather up all the info possible before I tackle it again next weekend.

Thank You all for your replies. They are appreciated

does the motor have a primer ?
is it in the right position?
make shure there is no leak from yoyr primer when you sqeeze the bulp.

your bulp should be nice and hard and you should not have any leaks when sqeezing.

may be float is set wrong or primer leaks.

good luck

Re: Evinrude 110 HP 1988 Carb fuel coming out the front

Thanks reeldutch, The primer id set correctly, red thing pointing to the outside. The bulb is hard but when it is hard and I squeeze it a bit that is when the fuel comes out the front of the carb. There does not appear to be any leaks. I checked this after seeing a previous post addressing air and fuel leaks to the pump. This motor has has the vro disconnected and is still using the vro pump.

All post are appreciated. Any body else?

Re: Evinrude 110 HP 1988 Carb fuel coming out the front

reeldutch, I moved the primer lever 180 degrees, ponting in toward the carb instead of to the outside of the engine. Trying to start results in lots of backfires. So I moved it back again to where I had it and it started up and ran as it has been. While running I moved it back to where you suggested. It revved up quite a bit then stated running rough, eventually stalling with a backfire. I repeated this several times with the same result. Any suggestions?

Thank You for your reply.

Re: Evinrude 110 HP 1988 Carb fuel coming out the front

The correct position of the red lever on the primer solenoid is pointing to the bottom of the solenoid.

Agree with DHP....needle and seats are still leaking. Curious to know....did you install an OEM carb kits or after market kit?

Do the floats look OK? When you invert the carb body (upside down) are the floats level with the float bowl gasket surface? The needle should be in place when you check the float level.

Re: Evinrude 110 HP 1988 Carb fuel coming out the front

OK, From here on in the lever will point toward the bottom of the solonoid.

Needles and seats will be looked at this weekend. May have been after market as I do not remember. I did install two new floats. I will post when what I see when I see it. Looks like my Saturday is now booked.

I thought I had it close but now realize the primer was in the wrong position the whole time. So whats with that. Only runs with the primer in the wrong position and leaks fuel from the carbs when I squeeze the bulb with the primer in the wrong position.? Would the primer in the wrong position have anything to do with the fuel coming from the carbs? That in part, was my original question.

Thanks for bearing with me.

All replies welcome and appreciated.

Re: Evinrude 110 HP 1988 Carb fuel coming out the front

yes

you had your primer in the manual position (open)
and when you sqeeze the bulp the fuel will flow threu your primer into your carbs and flood everything.
and you will see gas comming out of carbs.

i think your floats are set to high and wil not let any fuel treu needle and seat.,
that why the moter backfired and stalled when you set the primer back to solenoid operation.
you closed off the fuel suplie and moter run out of gass.

my bet is when you rebuild the carbs set the float level and your problem is gone.
if you have the primer set the right way.

good luck
your an the right track now

reeldutch

Re: Evinrude 110 HP 1988 Carb fuel coming out the front

I was just following the post and looking to learn some things myself. It definitely sounds like flooding from the bowls.

Just curious, is it possible to get the floats in upside down, and if so, what happens? Always closed or always open? Anyone know?

Good luck w2much, I've been on a fairly long and costly learning curve myself lately, and I bought mine. But this forum and the folks here are great.
