Does not sound too bad for running on a hose.-------------You might want to do a compression check for future reference.---Check that it is firing on all 4 cylinders.---Note ---winding it up with no load on the prop is not a good idea at all.

is all the smoke normal or is it steam? after a while it will clear up until full throttle, but of course this is with the hose on, never taken this boat out yet, just bought it or making payments on as we speak for 2500.

A compression test is a good idea.---You say you do not want to be stranded on the water so a new impeller is a good idea.--------Have you tested the overheat warning horn ?

Actually, the engine sounds pretty good. Idles well and does not really shake much. Agree, a compression test is needed. One thing I noted, was that the telltale was pretty weak. Sort of just dribbles out of the nipple/restrictor in the lower cowling. Even at higher rpm's. It does appear that water is moving into the powerhead, but I would be reluctant to take it out on the lake with an impeller that is that weak. Best to replace it prior to going out on the water.

could be the water hose lack of water, I dunno, hose runs from a pump and the pressure gets weaker the further out it is. Many people tell me to get it out on the water for better testing.

All of my outboards pump a strong telltale stream on the garden hose-at idle. If you get the right volume of water to the engine, the impeller will create the internal pressure (on the telltale.)

You made reference to full throttle. Like the other poster said, dont rev on the hose. The no load RPM's are not good, and the hose provides marginal flow at best.

Seems to run pretty good. If it was me I'd do the impeller, thermostats, head gaskets (and check the rubber water diverters while I was in there), since you dont have a history with that engine. All maintenance items truth be told.

The engine sounds great to me. I would drop the lower unit though and change the water pump. These are normal wear items and depending on usage should be changed every season, or every other season, depending on usage. I always change the water pump when I buy a new boat. Its pretty easy to do also. Also, a compression test would be nice for peace of mind.
