I have a 1992 115 Evinrude that I lost my #4 cylinder on. Pulled the head and piston was beat to heck plug was as well. Any ideas on what could have went through cylinder so i can make sure this doesnt happen again? I was suspecting a broken ring. Second question is what year powerheads are interchangable with mine. If I use a different year will there be any other considerations ( ie: compression ratio, other connections and compatibilites). Also what other options would I have as far as different v-4 powerheads in different horsepower ratings off different year models. What about off of a Johnson?Any help here would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

you would see shrapenal or a missing ring... you recently change your plugs?you sure the right plug was used? ie to long of a reach? smashed up against piston?

Plugs were not changed recently and piston was beat up on entire top, not just where it would have hit electrode. i was also wondering if any other size powerheads would work on my motor if so what years and sizes can i use. thanks

. OMC Johnson and Evinrude are pretty much the same as they are manufactured by OMC OMC is gray, Johnson is white, and Evinrude is blue. I have an OMC 1992 115 and use Johnson and evinrude parts. All parts are listed as OMC on the parts websites. If you have a V4 cross flow engine, life is good as this block was a commonly mass produced block and produced for many years. Also, there are many places that sell short blocks for this engine. I just finished rebuilding mine and it runs as good as new.

hope this helps

Not unusual for a crossflow to throw a ring. If the rings get carboned up, they will overheat, then crack and the fragments will rattle around in the combustion chamber till they break up, then exit the exhaust. Using a carbon guard treatment periodically will extend the life of these engines, running on today's poor quality fuels.
