when's the last time the water pump has been rebuilt? it is pumping water good, right? sorry to ask the obvious, but no mention of it so far in the thread. when you're running it on the muffs the water pressure from the hose forces water through the engine, so it might be getting more that way than when it has to pump on it's own, right?

motors shouldn't run over 160, an ir gun might help.

I believe the water pump was rebuilt 8 yrs ago when I purchased the boat & motor. Right, I only turn on the water 1/2 way on to make sure I dont overpower the pump/impellar on the muffs. Dont get me wrong, water comes out but not poures out. According to my thermostat it does run at 175 WOT.

The problem is the 77 115hp has no tell tail... I am not sure how much is coming out the ports, but it is coming out them in a spray/mist when running in the water. No access to an ir gun. :-(

IR gun $39 at home Depot etc. I would change the water pump. 7 Years too long for impeller integrity. you'll have to pull lower unit and get kit.
Get gaskets for head covers and heads. Wouldn't hurt to pull to clean out water channels and replace deflectors if that model has them. Not sure on '77
You'll continue to find assistance on performing above maint. here.
good luck!

wow 7 years on an impeller. that's an 'at least every other year' kinda thing. I'm picky, I got stranded once years ago and now change mine out every year. it's just too easy and inexpensive to do. also, there are some threads here on adding a tell tale, it would make me crazy not to be able to turn back and see that stream of water!

Re: EVINRUDE 115hp Model # 115793S

Thank You. I will try to get new pump kit, impellar, deflectors, ventatherm, and gaskets. I am trying to get this immediate overheating problem fixed with the least amount of $ needed. I have already pulled the ventotherm housing & messed up the gasket for that. I will pull the head covers to check the deflectors. I know the impellar needs to be replaced/fixed every few years but the water pump also should be done/rebuilt as well.

If the deflectors are not messed up where would I check for dirt or weeds that may have been sucked in & cloging the water passages? Do I pull the piece behind the thermostat housing that houses the springs & nylon valves to check for foreign material?

Yeah here in Arizona we dont have freezing weather. I figured the water pump impellar would be good longer in this climate. I have 3 12v batteries & trolling motor on the boat so I can troll back if something happens to my outboard lol. Our lakes here in Arizona I frequent are only a few miles max from the launch ramps.

Yeah after this I think I really need to add a tell tail. Is the linkage to pull the lower unit located behind my carbs? What is the linkage called so I can locate it on the evinrude explosion diagrams?? Thanks again for all the help on these forums! ;-)
