Evinrude 115hp No Fire

I recently aquired a supposedly '69 evinrude 115hp outboard that has no fire. Has great compression at 120psi per cylinder. The previous owner told me he put a new Pulse Pack on it sometime ago but it has been sitting for along time not sure how long though. It is a very clean motor and he said it ran strong but I cant get it to fire. The model #115983 E,, serial #E 02450. Can the stator rust up under the flywheel just by sitting? There are no fuses shot or wires rotted that I can find. Any suggestions on what to try and look for on a motor that has set for awhile? Can the coil and Pulse Pack be checked off the motor?

That should have a ampifier. Check that out.

I've got the same motor (115983e) had the same problem, turned out the two wires from the pulse pack that go up under the flywheel through the timer base to the sensor had rotted with age and were grounding the sensor so the pulse pack wasn't triggering. Replaced the wires (yes you can just replace the wires just be careful) and all was golden.
Also , if you haven't already done it, disable the automatic choke it was nothing but trouble. Do a search for the proper way, I don't remember right now.

Well just checked the wires from the pulse pack and they seem to be in good shape. Was told that it probably is the Pulse Pack thats bad. Any way of checking these? If so do they have to stay on the motor or can you take them off to check them?

I don't think they can be tested, they are the early capacitor discharge. Yes the flywheel needs to come off, the two wires are clamped to the timing base and flex everytime the timing changes. After 39 years, mine were cracked and rotted right at the clamp. The sensor is under the distributor.

Can the Pulse Pack go bad just from sitting for a long time without being fooled with? These pulse packs are outrageously priced for such an older motor!! Anywheres from $230-$350 new!! Is there any aftermarket packs that will replace them thats not so expensive? I hate to just go buy one and that not be the problem. This motor is in very very good condition to just give up on it.

Any ideas from anyone? Im lost on what to try. Other than taking this motor to a mechanic and getting charged out the wazoo for something that might not be anything.

hey mitch, If that pulse pack was changed properly, there should be a purple wire going from the pulse pack to the power strip on the motor, when the key is turned on there should be 12v to that purple wire, check that and get back to me. I'm new on this forum but I know your motor very well, so I will do my best to help.
