Evinrude 120 V4 lower unit rattle

I just got a boat with a '92 Evinrude 120 V4(SN# N/A- will get if needed). Was running it on first outing to see what it would do- heard a pop noise and eased off to throttle to have it make a noise like a bearing or something went out. I know the motor itself is ok- I limped in at 5mph, sounds good at idle, engage fwd/rev and the "rattle" starts. I'm a little leary of taking it to a mech right now, just after Hurricane Ivan. Prices & time!!! I'm ignorant about outboards, does this sound like an easy fix?

Hi Bacardi,<br /><br />I am not very experience in boat repairs but just had a very similar experience in the last 2 months. Had a sound coming from my '96 90HP V4 Johnson that sounded like a shot bearing or a bit like a 4 stroke knocking (but mine is a 2 stroke). I took it to 2 different mechanics who both said "It is running fine, but I had a bit of water in my gearcase and to replace it and keep and eye on it".<br /><br />I ended up pulling it apart myself knowing something was wrong. The driveshaft bearing and seal were shot and I was completely missing a tooth on the fwd gear and on the mating pinion gear <br /><br />Took it to a shop to get repaired but the cost was greater than I could buy a rebuild for <br /><br />Fortunetly for me I found an outfit selling brand new gearcses they pulled for jet drive installs and got a good deal on it. I was quoted $2700 for a new gearcase!

I have been to a few places, and found the same answer. Looking at around $1500. for mine. I haven't taken it apart, just drained the metallic fluid from the foot!!! Does't sound good-<br /><br />Do you know what diff HP/year is compatible? It's a '92 120H Evinrude V4 2 stroke.<br />Not sure of other info needed. I've searched by serial #, with no luck.

hello<br /> if no shafts are damaged a sealkit is about 60,water pump kit about 60 gear set about 400 and takes 3 hours or so to replace them.<br /> more if broken/corroded fasteners are an issue. havent seen a half way late model v4-v6 case with good housings and shafts that I cant rebuild for 1000 bucks or so.
