i had a problem on a 1979 v4 115 not sure if they are that simular but after many months of headscratching i replaced the rectifier, stator and power pak and that did the trick for me.

You can get the S80 Neon Tester here. You can also test those coils using a Peak Reading DVA Meter.

Stevens Instruments

c/6

Hooty

Re: EVINRUDE 140 1977 STILL NO FIRE

the stator i had showed signs of the insulation melting. it looked like caramel melting down on the block. i really do not know why but the bad rectifer made the stator go bad and that made the power pack go bad. I sure do not know as much as these other guys but i spent monthts checking everyother thing, carbs, gas, gas lines and . do what ever hooty says he know it all and helped me a lot.

Robb, unplug the main harness(the big red plug) then jump from your battery straight to the starter soleniod and crank the motor. Check for fire while cranking.

A failed rectifier, as long as everything else is OK, will not prevent a motor from running. I had a motor with intermittant rectifier problems that ran fine for almost a year before I replaced it. The only problem was a discharged battery after every trip!

A bad rectifier might effect the way the engine runs. To eliminate it as a problem, just disconnect it and see if you have spark. If not, hook it back up.

c/6

Hooty

If your not getting spark at any cylinder, check the wire that is the kill system.black and yellow I believe, check the ignition system for continuity one wire at a time.yes eliminate the ignition switch from the equation by unpluging the main harness.

Robb,

Make sure the ignition fuse isn't blown. It's located just to the rear and top of the starter. It's in a connector that looks like a regular barrel type wire connector.

Re: EVINRUDE 140 1977 STILL NO FIRE

i was just on the phone with the previous boat owner and this is what i found out.1 or 2 times the motor wouldnt start and he said he shook the wire harness near the engine and bingo it started.but my question is if i removed the yellow and black wire from the power pak and jumped the solenoid if it was the harness would this method rule it out because it does bypass the ignition but maybe it doesnt bypass something else...thanx

robb,

That is useful information. You have a poor connection somewhere or an intermittant open in a wire.

You need to start peeling back tape and closely scrutinizing each and every wire. Don't trust a connection that "looks" OK.

Unplug the big red connector first. If it fires then your problem is forward of the connector. Just disconnecting the kill circuit does not totally eliminate the harness.

Re: EVINRUDE 140 1977 STILL NO FIRE

ok again thanx for all the help guys i disconnected rectifier no change if i diconnect red harness connector what do i do run a hot lead direct from battery to hot side solenoid? i found a spark short the red starter wire was arching out on one of the metal harness wire holders. fixed still no fire.i did however find a broken wire on a unit possible voltage regulator not sure has two wires to a connector with fuse link going to the terminal block this is the first thing i noticed when the problem arose i ran a wire from the broken piece to the conector no change this part has numbers on it but my evinrude parts guy dont know what it is its metal cased about 3 1/2 inches long 2 inches wide with like a wax coating on the back where wires going into it kinda like a coil.mounted to the block on a metal bracket possible aftermarket # are 511404 d1-2 bringing this part to another dealer now figured i would bring all the people that were helping me up to date when i win the lottery tonight i will be keeping you's in mind...thanx :D

You don't have to run any hot wires after disconnecting big red plug. Engine will get ignition power from stator. If you get the motor started lick this you will either have to reconnect the plug or try to choke the motor down to kill it.
