I have a 1990 140hp Evinrude. The tach is working but the charging system is not. I cleaned the terminal connection and verified voltage to the terminal strip. I also tested the purple wire coming from the voltage reg/rec it matches battery voltage. Advancing the rpm it still does not charge. The engine has a miss also. I’m trying to figure out both issues. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

One side of rect/reg good be bad..equals no output. Get CDI book and test

Thank you. I will try to test it tonight! Could a faulty reg/rec cause miss near WOT? I checked the spark on all 4 cyl and it is jumping 7/16” at idle. When I get on plane the boat rpm bounces up and down almost like you would keep pulling the controls back and forth.

Is the boat slowing and speeding up with the rpm fluctuations? A bad regulator can give you wonky gauge readings. You say the engine is missing, but I'm not sure of that -- might be just the gauge. Make sure the fuel is fresh (adding fresh fuel to old is not the solution). Water in the fuel can cause hesitation/speeding up, or stall the motor. Is your impeller fresh? Your rectifier/regulator is water cooled.

It is slowing and speeding up. I drained the fuel and put fresh in when I got it out. I changed the fuel filters and a water separator filter when I changed the fuel. The impeller only has minimal time on it. Less than 6 hours of run time.

If mine, I would replace the regulator/rectifier. Do some testing first -- bench test result in anything?

You could have some hull issues. Maybe water under the flooring -- some shifting weight.

I’m going to order a new one. I haven’t got a chance to test it. I will still test it before I replace it, I usually shy away from throwing parts at it but the hours I’m working are limiting my diag. time. Not to mention it takes me an hour to get to the water to test it. The boat is sitting out of the water with the plug pulled jacked up as high as it goes. There isn’t a drop of water coming out of it. I appreciate everyone’s help!

I'm with you on willy-nilly throwing parts at it. But it does appear that the unit is causing problems, and the thing can be dangerous if it suffers from overheating. Get the rubber gasket that goes with it.

Post back -- hope that's the fix.

I happened to be at the closest marina boating when I took it out for the first time this year. It started the speed up and slow down as soon as I took it out. I tried to drop it off for them to look at since I was working a lot they said it’s to old. They won’t work on anything in the 90s. So I’m trying to look at it as I get a chance. I’ll let you know the results. Thanks again!

Have someone pump bulb during the surging, could be weak fuel pressure or carb problems

I did try pumping the ball during the surging it continues to surge. I also took the high speed jets out and cleaned them.

I installed the new rec/reg and it is charging!! Now time to take it out on the water and give it a test to see if the surge is still there.

I got a chance to take it out today. I backed in the ramp and had trouble getting it to start. Battery was at 12v. Once it finally fired it ran for a little with some throttle. It would not idle. Even when stalled. I had a hard time getting it to start back up. After it stalling on me multiple times then struggling to get it to start back up I pulled it back out of the water. This is trip #3 of disappointment for my kids. I stopped at another local marina and asked if they could look at it. They told me the same as the last one. They don’t work on anything in the 90’s. So back in the garage it goes and back out of town for work I go. Anyone know anybody in the Pittsburgh area that work on it? Thanks
