evinrude 140 oil leak?

i went to look at a 78 Mako 17 with a '78 140 Evinrude motor. the owner said he had ran the motor yesterday to show someone else. before he turned it on i saw some oil near the bottom of the motor. i asked him about it but he said that he has to mix the oil. is this normal? any suggestions as to what i should look for? he said it needs no repairs. he has had it for the last 15 years. he said that the compression was good.

Mixing oil and gas is the only lubrication a 2 stroke engine gets. That said it sounds like you would be much better off to have the engine, boat, and trailer looked at by a pro prior to purchase. There are many things a pro can look at and test to make sure your outfit will keep going for more than 30 days.

If the owner has the required test equipment, ask him top do a compression test, while you watch, record the compression for each cyl. no more than 10% variance between cylinders, looking for 100 lbs or better.

spark test, good blue spark spark tester set at 7/16 gap,

then take it for a terst ride, check out shifting forward n reverse, run the engine through the paces, idle, in gear idle, low speed. medium speed, high speed, see how the boat handles at all speeds, inspect the cables, throttle and shift. check transom a boat fo that year may have transom cracks or weak.

All in all the cross flows are really good dependable engines, I have 4 of them and they r good, but require some maintenance also, it is 30 years old, parts are available and if it is right it will serve you well.

i take it that it might not be nothing at all? another thing i noticed is that the fin beneath the prop was broken. will this deter the performance in any way?

The fin, or skeg, is important to protecting the propeller from direct hits from underwater obstructions. When functioning properly it can help to lift the motor up and prevent serious damage to the rest of the motor and the propeller.

You can easily add a Skeggard to the broken skeg, or have a welder add a
replacement.
