HI

 Can anyone tell me what the correct temperature, in centigrade or fahrenheit, is please.

Since a service (motor has done 200 hours) including a water punp impeller replacement, the temperature gauge shows the motor as running below normal (green) at revs. Took the boat back to the service agents several times and they can't find anything wrong with the motor. They did a modification to the gauge by putting in a relay but that didn't change anything.

They took temp readings at 500rpm increments and faxed them off to Bombardier in Melbourne and they said everything was OK. The temps were 60 degrees celsius at idle, dropped to about 25 at 1500rpm and increased to around 39 at 4000rpm.

My question has always been, what is the correct temperature at operating rpms and no one can tell me.( they tell me that no one has worried about low temps and that everything is designed around not operating too hot.) And if the low temps are OK why does the gauge show the engine as operating below the normal operating range.

Tarka

Tarka... Freezing at centigrade = 0°. Freezing at fahrenheit = 32°. You do the math.

Thermostats open at approximately 143° fahrenheit, but I have never actually checked the engines to see what their running tempertures were.

Hopefully someone else will jump in here with that info.

You haven't told us what motor. My '85 140 runs ~ 140° F @ high power settings, lower at idle and thru 2K RPM. Other temp controlled OMC motor may be more in the range of 150 to 155° F @ high power settings. You need to check the shop manual for your specific motor. Many < 10 HP motors have no t-stats and run somewhat cooler.

Re: Evinrude 150 HP running temperature

Thanks for the responses. The motor is a 1991 Evinrude Intruder V6 150 HP.

The thermostats open at 60deg celsius which is around 143 far. which is OK. but it drops down to 40celsius at speed which is opposite to what I thought and confirmed by your reply.

Workshop manuals don't help in respect operating temps at speed other than they shouldn't exceed a certain temperature 5to avoid overheating. There are alarms to protect against this also.

Re: Evinrude 150 HP running temperature

The engine runs much hotter at idle. AT 900 rpms with inlet water temp of 70+-15 F degrees cylinder head temp should be 140+-15 F degrees. AT 5000 rpms temp should be no more then 160 degrees F. From 1994 OMC service page 4-7. When the rpms reach about 2000, the water pressure pushes the thermostats off there seats, and they no longer conrtol temp. The thermostat is also the pressure relief valve. The overheat switch set at 240 degrees F. I also think the manual has the temps backward, because most of the loopers I have worked on will run hotter at idle. The resister that was grafted in the gauge will only move the gauge needle, it is a bandaid fix to a junk gauge. You can move the gauge needle anywhere you like with the resister.
