evinrude 150 outboard spark problem

just replaced powerpacks and had boat running great. ran out of gas filled tank now wont run. check for spark very little one side and none on the other. also not getting gas. pump up fuel bal til had crank the engine over then it goes soft. real trouble if think any help would be appreciated...thanks sorry forgot to mention 1987 v6 w vro

Cant imagine why you would lose spark from running out of fuel.Do you have a spart tester ,or are you checking with plug or what.The ball should go soft after you crank,the fuel lines are likely full of air,often the best way to purge it ,it removing the hose from the eng,then squeeze the ball ,have you finger over the hose end as the ball expands,what that does is allows the ball to suck fuel,not air,do it a few times til you get gas,then reattach ,and squeeze the ball to fil carbs,when you tested for spark,did you have all plugs out to allow the eng to turm a fast RPM,if not you will get no or little spark,my guess is ,once you have fuel up to the cylinders ,and as long as you get a good crank,you will fire.

Lots of sediment can build up in the tank over the years, once your fuel level gets down that low, it will pick up said sediment and try and feed it into your carbs. If you have any filters, which you should, I would check them, this would also cause a no-vent situation which would colapse the ball.

only had one plug out at a time to test for spark. also i put little gas in cyl. and ran alittle then shut down. i'll try your suggestions thanks ALSO FORGOT TO MENTION THAT WHEN ISQUEEZE BALL SO FAR I HEAR A CLICK FROM THE FUEL PUMP I THINK.

If you can, try and run it off a portable fuel source, this will eliminate the filter clog scenario.

kinda thought you didnt have a spark tester,you really need one to test 4 spark,I think your lines are full of air,try my suggestion,you can also get a spray bottle,put some mixed gas/oil and shoot it in the carbs,NOT STARTING FLUID,It will pull the fuel after a few tries.

That doesn't work, go to auto store and get a $12 adjustable spark tester.
Set gap to 7/16th inch, remove all plugs and re-test.

ok have gas flowing again thru pump etc. and spark bought spark tester. when turning engine over won't start. if i advance the throttle to start it will run. but i must keep moving throttle back and forth to keep it running. if i don't she quits. only other thing is i noticed a gray thing in gas line with main gas line after filter. little gray thing with small gas line to it and two wires coming out of it and the gas can only get to it not out of it. located right by starter. where do i go from here??? thanks weaver could it be a timing issue?????

At idle, are all the butterfly valves completely closed ?
At WOT , are they all at 90deg level?

How about some history on the motor, why did do any work on it, what happened.? Has it ever run good for you?

Do yourself a huge favor and order the factory service book so you at least understand all the bits on the engine. You'll save a ton of cash DIY.
