Evinrude 150 Ram Ficht problems

My Evinrude died on the lake a couple of weeks ago. It is a year 2000, and the motor stopped and we let it cooldown, heat light turned on right when it stopped not earlier for some warning. I brought it in and they said the compression was low and a piston was all messed up. Possibly a oil pump problem they said. I thought these motors were fool proof and they would shut down before damage occured. Is there still a warrentee or recall? I'm not sure what to do now, I'm sure if they fix it it will never run the same. Any suggestions?

Hi, thanks for the help,- The Serial#G04867570 is for a Evinrude 150 Ram Ficht 2000'. The mechanic has not yet checked for codes yet, they are running behind, they have had the boat for 4 weeks.
Lief

Was it low or out of oil when it got the piston?

As many people have found out, these systems were too new and untested to rely on bells and whistles to tell them when there was a problem.

No offense intended here but thats why they've been called idiot lights on autombiles for too many years to remember ;)

I was talking about the auto shut off, and there is and always was oil in the tank, I check it every time I take it out

I have a 2001 FichtRam 150 with over 1000 hrs. on it and I often check the oil tank for water content. When tank oil level is low that is good time to empty, and clean the small strainer on the pick up. Never know what you might find in there besides water accumulation.

Noticed that BRP Evinrude installs a oil filter now ,inline before the oil lift pump on the newer DI motors.

Motor has had no updates & no warranty claim, check with the dealer before put any money into this unit.

Lief,

Your FICHT does not have a "shut-down" mode, nor do most other outboard motors.

If a FICHT overheats or has a critical "check engine" code, your motor will slow to around 2500rpm, but will not be shut off by the computer.

From your description of a "bad piston", chances are the problem was from detonation or an injector that got plugged and ran lean.

How could an oil pump burn one cylinder? The oil is injected into the fuel before it goes to the carb.Would it not get all six cylinders?

James W. The ficht motor oiling system fed oil to each piston individually, so a blocked oil feed line can cause failure of one piston.
However I agree with sea horse, more likely an injector or similar.
As for fool proof, there were a lot of problems with these early Ficht motors which led to the demise of OMC

Re: Evinrude 150 Ram Ficht problems

If it was a blocked oil line, the connecting rod bearing would be either "blued" or "welded" to the crankshaft due to lack of lubrication. If only the piston and cylinder wall was damaged, then it could have been from detonation, hot spot, or lean running.
