evinrude 15012, odd water intake mod?

got this motor in a package deal with four others, someone spent a fair bit of time painting it white...powerhead/carb, the whole deal, with yellow accents. the water scoop has me a bit perplexed,? ( the area where the motor came from used to be a hot spot for hydro racing ....30+years ago) i dont really want to take it apart..until someone needs parts, but if and when i do, should i expect to see no impeller???

Well that is something that I have never seen before.

Bad idea, as that is the intake for when going in reverse. With the scoop facing forwards, it totally blocks all water flow in reverse. Could be catastrophic.

Maybe for hydro racing, they dont really use reverse. A 15012 is not an ideal race motor though!

EDIT: Upon closer inspection it looks as if there is still a small slot for water to flow in reverse? Is it a closed cup?

Did you get 4 15012's?

I had 5 up until last week, but have sold them all but 1.

looks like a 5mm hole feeding water, and the gap(small slot) at the narrow end of the scoop is about 1mm. definitely an odd modification. might have to pull it apart just to see if theres an impeller in there!!!

nope , not 4 5012,s......bought the motors for 1 seagull. :facepalm:

If he was serious about racing, it would seem like he'd have it jacked up and that scoop would be out of the water, accomplishing nothing. At least that is my thought on it.
