Hi can anyone please give me some advice.

I have a Evinrude 15hp 2 Stroke 1986 outboard and was using it on a rib today for the first time using a 50-1 mix.
The engine was running fine for about 1 hour then I stopped on the beach for a couple of hours for lunch and then it would not restart!

There is a spark from the plugs.
There seems to be fuel getting to the carb as I took of the pipe to the carb and pulled the start cord and fuel came out.
The fuel is fresh today.
The carb was overhauled by myself before hand with new jets and gaskets fitted.
It is pumping water perfectly.
I have tried overiding the kill switch so its not that.

As I said I was wizing around for about 1 hour with no problem at all before it decided to die on me in the middle of the ocean, luckily I was rescued by a Jetski!

Any ideas anyone?

I would go right back to the carb.Did you install new fuel lines? Ethanol resistant. My guess is some loose ethanol deterioration fuel line in the carb.Hope thats it and its not spendy.

Hi
I did not install new few lines as they all looked good and not that old.
what do you mean by Ethanol in fuel lines?

alcohol aded to fuel, but its propably not good for fuel delivery system(soften fuel hose, disolve)
did you check compresion?
clean carb once again, install new spark plugs

So if rubber disolves it creates Ethanol?

Compression is great, like a new engine.
New plugs have already been fitted.
I tried spraying some Carb Cleaner into the Carb air intake and it kicked over for 1 or 2 seconds.

And replace the 5/32" fuel line from pump to carb, no matter how good it looks. There's no screen past the pump, and ethanol mixed in today's fuel can break down and dislodge material from the inside of that hose and gum your nice clean carb very quickly. Remove and take a look through your main jet with a light. Probably clogged tight. You can use a single thin strand from a multi-strand electrical wire to clear out that jet. Blow out the low speed circuit too.

I just had this happen on my '88 15hp. Turned out to be the little clip that pulls the needle seat in and out of the jet in the bowl that attaches to the float. Whoever redid this carb previously forgot to put it in. It actually ran for a bit last year for me before it just wouldn't start. Rebuilt carb, all good. I'd go back to the carb, if you have spark and compression, you don't have fuel.

I have ordered a new clear pvc fuel pipe to go between the pump and carb, and also a new PVC hose from the fuel tank to the engine (old one is also rubber).
As for the carb, i am going to have to strip it down again and clean it all with carb cleaner and compressed air.
Will I need to buy another gasket kit?

probably not....a bowl gasket if the base to body gasket leaks after reassemblying maybe

Just took all the carb apart and it looked very clean, i could not see any debris at all.
Anyway cleaned it thouroghly again and put it back together, just waitng for my new fuel lines then I will let you know how I get on.

I hope this was the problem!

You may not "see" debris. Jets can get gummed up from old fuel but if they all blow through ok, you "should" be fine.

OK I have now cleaned all the carb again and replaced all the fuel lines and it now starts!
However is it normal to have to pull it around 8 times to get it started from cold?
Once it is has warmed up it starts on the first pull.

What's your cold start procedure?....did you check the position of the carb linkage roller on the timing cam mark as the throttle plate begins to open in the carb throat?

My Start procedure is... Pump the primus bulb, pull out the choke a little then pull the start cord!
I did not remove the linkage on the carb, its in the same position as when I took it off.

Perhaps I have to pull it several times to get the fuel to the carb?

Re: Evinrude 15hp 1986 Run for a while then stopped

when you pump the bulb until firm ,you've filled the carb bowl and the needle has shut off the fuel flow.."pull out the choke a little"?. for a cold start pull it out all the way...you didn't install the choke rod upside down did you?, one side has a longer slot than the other and allows the choke plate to close completely when you pull it out. Check that your carb linkage roller aligns with the mark on the timing cam as your throttle plate starts to open..the roller should be centered on this mark or slightly advanced.Try this starting procedure..1.pump the bulb till firm..2. with the motor in neutral, twist the throttle grip as far advanced as the neutral start lockout allows 3. when it fires go to 1/2 choke and reduce you throttle setting to lower the rpm ..4. push the choke off completely

Thanks
The Choke is the correct way up!
I did not know there was a mark on the timing can!

Ok The Roller is in line with the line on the cam (very slightly advance) but it still takes about 8 pulls to start it and when it start it smokes quite a bit from the exhaust (50-1 mix), but like I say once its warm it start on the first pull.
I forgot to mention I am using remotes with this engine.
