Evinrude 15hp hard start.

I just bought 1992 Evinrude [ E15RENM ]. It was hard to start so I rebuilt the carburetor, changed head gasket, replaced spark plugs and water pump... After alll... it is still very hard to start.
If I spay some starter fluid into spark plugs hole, it will start right away but it won't idle very well and stall after few minutes.

What should I do next?

when it does go with a shot of starter fluid try pumping the fuel hose to see if it keeps going ....

if yes the fuel pump my need a close look at


seems we had a case some time ago when the little crooked tube (part #4) which feeds the idle circuit was an issue. make certain the idle cct on the carb gets good clean up ....

the tube is fed by the part #2 nozzle make certain it is cleaned and air blasted

If the fuel bulb was correctly primed with arrow facing upward till fully firm with choque pulled, that motor should start right up on first or second rope pull when performing the cold/morning start procedure given all the mechanical and electrical parts are in excellent working order which isn't known.

Was the new head gasket torqued to factory specs with a torque meter or hand torque ? Anyway perform a compression test and report both upper and lower cylinder PSI obtained values.

I've replaced the tube #4 as it included in the carb kit. I was concerned about it because the tube was little long so it make the part #2 sit up in the air, should I cut the tube short?

Checked the fuel pump, I've removed the hose that connects to the carb and gas is coming out of it when I press the prime bulb.

the head gasket torqued to 17lbs, the compression was reading low, both around 70psi but that tester might be bad as I tested on my good running motor and the result is the same. I've a new tester ordered and will test again.

Remove cowling.----Remove 4 wee screws and remove cover on carburetor airbox / silencer.-----Pull choke on.----Visually check and see if choke flapper is closed.----Pull cord once and see if choke remains closed.

The choke flapper seem functional as it should. I got the motor to start on first pull today after got home from work. But it won’t start again after that.

If it starts and quits on the first pull the choke has done it's job.----Try pushing choke in for the next 2 pulls.-----Understanding how motors work will help you getting it started.----These things are not the same as a modern vehicle.----There you take your seat.---Push a button and the sensors / computers does everything for you !

Now I am really confusing with this motor, the compression test came out decent with a new tester (95/105). But it is still very hard to start and once it starts, it won't last too long before it stalled and won't start again. Sometimes it will start with 1 pull, sometimes it takes 20 pulls.
I replaced the spark plugs as same as the one in the outboard when I bought it (QL77JC4) but when I look it up with the model #, seems like I need QL77J4?
Not sure if this makes any difference but I have no clue where else to look..

I am going to be blunt here.-----A few choices.----Test with another hose and tank with fresh 50:1 mix.----Take motor in to have a shop check it.------Have shop show you in detail how to start this fine motor ( have one myself ) , show you the steps you are missing.----Or buy a new motor with push button electric start.

Might check 6, 17, 33. The nozzle well gasket (6) has to be in place. The gasket cover on top has to be the configuration shown. Washer 33 has to be in place or the cam roller will not work correctly.

Use carb cleaner with the plastic nozzle in every opening on top under the rubber gasket.

Use carb cleaner with the plastic nozzle in every opening on top under the rubber gasket.

I opened the Carb twice to make sure everything in place, 6, 17, 33 checked. I then saw a hairline cark on #25, don't know if that was an issue but have a new one ordered.

while it in F or R, yes.

No in neutral you turn throttle handle to the stop for starting.-----Ignore the makings on the handle !
