First post on this site so HI Everyone. I'm going to pick up a 15hp Evinrude that's could be as old as 75 or as new as 85 today. My cousin is giving it to me for my 21' Hudson Bay Fighter. This motor hasn't been run for years as it has been in storage. It was inside the whole time but it's going to need some love before I even try to start it. I know nothing if I know anything, about outboards so would like help in all the most important thing's to do before trying to start it? It ran before it was put in storage. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks Robin

Go to the Engine FAQs HERE Find the article titled "Awakening a sleeping outboard" and read that. Also note any others there that may be useful.

New plugs, new impeller, clean carb with carb rebuild kit, and spray a little lube in the cylinders.

I have an 87 9.9 that was the same situation. I pulled the carb and it was gummed up, so I cleaned it and rebuilt it with the kit. Then I replaced the impeller in the water pump and found it was falling apart from sitting.

You will need to check and replace seals as needed in the lower unit.

well you might want to check it out thourghly because of the seals dry rotting and deffinitly a carb kit and tune up and a lower unit service is going to be called for
it might not be worth the parts that it might take so check it out good

i agree with joho5

make sure when you clean the carbs if it has plastic parts do not soak them in carb cleaner
spray them and blow them off with air
and make sure the floats are hole free

replace all the fuel lines with alcohol resistant lines, the ethanol, eats the inside of old lines, and clogs the carbs.

Lots of good advice here for you to consider. One of the most important things to do is (once you know the year) order yourself a factory service manual. There are so many things covered it will pay for itself in no time. Post the model number once you know it and someone will let you know the year of it. Best of luck. I'm sure you will enjoy it. Rick.

:)That motor isn't worth squat. You should call me with your address, and I will come to your house to remove that oversized door stop. Don't waste your time with it. :D

Thanks everyone sorry I didn't just look in the FAQ's. Picked it up yesterday! Looks really good, especially under the lid looks new. My cousin said he would be surprised if this motor has ever seen the water more than 20 times. I will find out the year, oder a manual, change fuel line's, carb kit, impeller and lube it all up including in the cylinder's and change plugs. Maybe give it a black paint job so it look good on my boat.

Thanks everyone

I wonder how fast this will push my 21 foot Hudson Bay freighter.:)

A Hudson Bay Fighter is a 21 foot flat transom tripping canoe designed for fur trading in the Hudson bay and rivers in northern Canada. It can handle 2000lb.
You can check them out by searching (Scott Canoes).
