Hi, I have an evinrude 15hp model:E15RCEC. Don’t know the year. My problem is that it will run only with the choke on and in high rpm only and it will not idle either. Any Idea on why is doing that. Carb was rebuilt but still same problem. Motor start every time on the 2nd or 3rd pull but will not run without the choke. I will really appreciate any help.<br />Thank you

If you have a lean-rich knob, like my 1984, try setting it to 1 turn from stop at lean. You may need to pull the knob forward to get past a block. <br /><br />Do not tighten past the point of resistance. After you turn to 1 revolution from stop, try 1/8 turns in either direction and wait 1 minute for the motor to adjust

Eula....these carbs had a lift tube for idle operation. Did you replace the tube and INSURE that the small tube that comes from the top of the carb, which is the idle circuit, was open? The hole is very, very small and the least little bit of junk will not let the engine idle. Also make sure the tube in the nozzle well is open also. You did replace the tube, didn't you?

Ezeke: I try that and it doesn’t make any different, is like no fuel is going thru unless you have the choke on and with full or mid throttle. Obj: I didn’t replace the tube; I did make sure that every hole was free and clean. I used pressure air and carburetor cleaner to clean every hole but I didn’t replace the tube. Is the tube included with the carb. Kit? Do you guys think this is a carb. Issue? I have an 1986 15hp evinrude but the carbs are different would it be ok if I switch carb?<br /><br />Thank you

Eula...if the tube was a clear plastic looking tube, get it outta there. Was your kit an OEM kit or generic. OEM kits come with a new tube made from rubber. It's possible that if you put the old tube back on, you could have plugged the little holes up doing so. Shoot, I done it once with a new tube. Tried to put it on dry with no lube like oil. Tore a chunk off the tube and plugged the hole. I would take another look.

100% agreement with OBJ. It's the idle circuit.

There is no clear plastic tube, what I have on mine is a flexible black rubber hose going from the bottom (where the float is) to the top plate (where the idle needle is). The carburetor that I have has 2 gaskets one on top and one on the bottom. The top side is a black plate with 7 screws and a gasket that is where the idle needle is and on the bottom of the carb. That’s where the float is. I don’t know if we are talking about the same carburetor. I have a picture if I can add the picture, it will be better so you guys can see it.<br />Thank you

I did test the fuel pump, what I did was with the motor running I pull the fuel hose from the carburetor and a good fuel flow was coming out of the fuel hose. That is the only way that I know on testing the fuel pump. Do you know if I can switch the carburetors from an evinrude 15hp 1986 to this motor 1989? The carburator are diferent they don't look the same but will it work?<br />Thank you

Eula.....we are talking about the same carb. Really, take another look at the idle circuit....that little hose between the two small nipples. Gotta be plugged or the little holes are plugged.

OJB thanks. <br />I finally work on the Carb. Today. I did like you told me to, and know motor starts on 2nd or 3rd pull and idles fine also. I did ran the motor today after it was fix for about 15 minutes on the bucket and there was a lot of oil on the water, Lower unit shift really smooth it runs fine on forward or reverse. I think I may have a broken o-ring but I don’t know where to start. Is there anyone out there that knows what I’m talking about? What do you guys think? I did change the water on the bucket and it turns dart quick. Motor was sitting for years.<br />Any help I will really appreciated<br />Thank you

eula.....not really understanding a "bucket of water". Hope you have the engine in a "tall" garbage can with the level well above the mating line between the lower unit and midsection.<br /><br />I don't understand the "broken o-ring" you mentioned. Does the engine idle OK?<br /><br />How many turns is the low speed needle out?<br /><br />What I'm asking is.....how does the engine run? If you run the engine in a "can", you will see a lot of surface "junk" floating around that you would not normally see in open water.

I did run the motor in a big garbage can; the lower unit was well deep inside the garbage can with the garbage can full of water. Motor runs and Idle fine that is not the problem. it is just that the water on the garbage can, gets really dirty and you can see oil on the water also. Is this normal? I did dump the dirty water out and fill the garbage can with water ageing ran the motor for 5 minutes and the water was really dirty with oil in it. I was concern that I may have a broken seal or o-ring on the lower unit and that is why I was getting all that oil on the water.<br />Thank you

I you're worried about it, you can check your lower unit for signs of water intrusion; the lower unit oil will turn the colour of coffee with cream. Just top up the oil you drain off.<br />The filthy water sounds perfectly normal to me. Especially if the engine was run much with the choke on before you fixed it. It doesn't take long to fill the exhaust leg up with goo that way.<br /><br />Good luck!

Yep...just like Paul said. Eula...put it on a boat and go run the bejesus outta it. Put some fuel system cleaner in with the gas and enjoy. If you have other problems crop up......let us know.
