I just recently bought a 14' boat with an 57 Evinrude 18 hp fast twin on it. The motor didn't run, ( carb was filthy ), so I cleaned the carb out and got it running. However, when my brother took the carb apart he didn't notice how many turns the lean or rich needles( both high and low speeds ) were set at in the first place. I have the motor running but 1) it idles very fast, and if I turn down low speed it starts to sputter 2) The motor does not rev up at high speeds like i think it should be. Any and all help on this motor would be very much apreciated.....manuals are very hard to find for this motor. rattler007@hotmail.com

(Carburetor Adjustments - Two Adjustable N/Vs)
(J. Reeves)

Initial settings are: Bottom high speed = seat gently, then open 1 turn out. Top slow speed = seat gently, then open 1-1/2 turns.

Setting the high and low needle valves properly:

NOTE: For engines that DO NOT have a shift selection, obviously there is no NEUTRAL position. Simply lower the rpms to the lowest setting to obtain the low speed needle va /lve adjustment.

(High Speed) Start engine (it will run pretty rough), shift into forward gear, take up to full throttle. In segments of 1/8 turn, wating for the engine to respond between turns, start turning in the bottom high speed needle valve. You'll reach a point whereas the engine will either start to die out or spit back (sounds like a mild backfire). At that point, back out the needle valve 1/4 turn. Within that 1/4 turn, you'll find the smoothest setting.

(Low Speed) Slow the engine down to where it just stays running. Shift into neutral. Again in segments of 1/8 turns, start to turn the top needle valve in. Wait a few seconds for the engine to respond. As you turn the valve in, the rpms will increase. Lower the rpms again to where the engine will just stay running. Eventually you'll hit the point where the engine wants to die out or it will spit back. Again, at that point, back out the valve 1/4 turn. Within that 1/4 turn, you'll find the smoothest slow speed setting.

When you have finished the above adjustments, you will have no reason to move them again unless the carburetor fouls/gums up from sitting, in which case you would be required to remove, clean, and rebuild the carburetor anyway.

Re: evinrude 18 hp fast twin

Thanks to both Joe Reeves and MCM for the great help with this motor. From what I can gather, this motor is a 1957 Evinrude, I have it running now, thanks to you two, however, my next question is, this motor has not run in over 2 yrs, after I fixed the carb and set it to the right lean and rich settings, I ran the motor in a barrel for about 20 min. When I was done the water was a dark brown color. What does this mean???? The water pump and everything seems to be working very well and the motor runs alot better than when I first started it. Is the motor just cleaning itself out after sitting outside for sooooo long???? Any help is greatly apreciated, this motor is alot different from my 2002 Honda 2 hp lol

Re: evinrude 18 hp fast twin

Well, once again, ty to MCM for the web sites.... I just found out that my motor is a 1964 Evinrude 18 hp Fast twin. Now I just need to find out what oil/fuel mix I should be running, since the motor has sat for 2 and a bit yrs . Man , y'all must think I'm nuts asking silly questions like this lol.

The bearing setup on that engine consists of all needle, roller, and ball bearings. This setup allows the engine to run safely on the 50/1 fuel/oil mixture (1pt of 50/1 oil to 6gal gas). A octane rating of 87 will be fine.

Ok Joe, if 50/1 is the right mix, why is my motor blowing blueish grey smoke when i run it in the tank? Is this normal for that yr and make????? or is it just because the motor hasn't run in 2+ yrs???????

Re: evinrude 18 hp fast twin

Well, it should smoke some, how much is too much?? could be it just needs a good tune up. here's a good article that deals with reviving a motor that has sat unused for a period of time, I think it will come in handy in your situation. See what you think and keep posting any results or problems.

http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=36;t=000033;p=1#000000

Also a good Decarb would probably eliminate a good deal of that smoke. For more info see these two links.

http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=36;t=000006
http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=36;t=000016

Hope this helps ;)
