Hi Guys,

I've just joined the forum after seeing so much info and advice provided by members.

I'm UK based and have just acquired a 1960 Evinrude 18HP Fastwin. It came in a deal and I was going to discard it as it was seized and looked a "bit too old" !!! However, curiosity got the better of me and I opened up the hood and started striping a few bits off. Anyway, I eventually got the cyl head off and managed to get her turning. Next I stripped the carb and the reed valve assembly. These have all been cleaned up and are ready to re-install. I intend to strip the powerhead to the crank to check out the bearings etc. I think it's worth it as I was amazed at the condition of the engine - original paint and no rounded bolt heads etc. I now want to see this little beauty running again and could do with some advice.

Is there a special tool for removing the flywheel or do I just use a puller on the teeth at the edge of the starter ring?

Is it possible to get a gasket set in the UK or do any of the US companies supply to this side of the ocean?

I'm seeing 32:1 and 50:1 being quoted for the fuel mix - which is correct?

Where would I start looking for a replacement carry handle assembly? the handle has been broken at some time!

Does anyone know the correct paint for this model, a metallic blue (Ser. No 15032 -52289) - is it blue mist ?

Can anyone recommend a specific manual for this motor - I don't want to spend my hard earned cash on something that covers a million and one motors with very little info on the Fastwin !

Finally, I would like to thank, in advance, anyone who has advice, tips, info etc. for this me and my ?new? motor.

Cheers

Nick

Don't use jaw pullers, get a three bolt, steering type puller to remove the flywheel. You shuold be able to get a gasket kit for that motor, maybe from here even. There is a wide debate about fuel mixtures. The recommended one is 24:1. If you rebuild it, and clean up the bearings etc, then I would run that mixture. For parts, try E-bay. same for a manual,

You can try looking on ebay for a service specific to your motor. Look at the year and model number on your motor. You should be able to find a round coin size plug (with the modle and serial number) on the same side as the fuel pump.

You can purchase a service manual from Kencook. I believe they are currently the authorized seller of reproducer of Evinrude/Johnson service, owner and parts manuals. Here is the link for link for 18hp your stated year.

Here is a link with a parts break down of your motor.

Thanks for the response guys - I knew it would be worth joining this forum.

Just an update on progress:-
Got the flywheel off and checked out the points etc. looks like it just came out the factory ! Set about removing the power head - had some problems with the screws that hold the powerhead to the lower casing - all rusted up, so had to drill them out but got it eventually. Why are they carbon steel and not stainless like the other screws :(
I'll split the crancase today and see if it's worth continuing with a rebuild. I'll let you know how it goes.

Cheers

Hi Guys,

Where would I start looking for a replacement carry handle assembly? the handle has been broken at some time!

Try posting a request/advertisement on this website. You don't have to join, but its section called webervise allows you to place an request or advertisement for parts or what ever for your motor that are hard to get.

AOMCI (Antique Outboard Motor Club, Inc)

I have bought an 18hp Evinrude carrying handle from a member on this site and it was a good price and the part was in good shape. You just advertise and they will contact you via email or whatever information you leave them.

Good luck
