this is an old big twin 40 hp 1962 very low hours.
It wont go full speed and burn a lot of oils (ratio: 24/1, I may try 35 or 40/1 for this problem.)
It has carb rebuild, complet new ignition (coils, points,...), new water pump.

Could it be the float adjustement????

when the carb was rebuilt did you/they remove the high speed jet clean it and run a wire thru it? how can it burn lots of oil when it is premixed. does it start easily, does it idle well?

I have a 67' 60hp Evi sportfour that i spent weeks chasing a problem just like yours.. i replace damn near everything while being mocked by the local marina for dumping money in what they called an anchor. You know what it was??? I little tiny hole found in the barrel of the carb, just like the description of tashasdaddy described. Now it runs strong and great. just my thoughts.

Have you verified the basics? Do you have good compression on both cylinders? Do you have good spark (the magneto ignition should be able to jump at least 1/4" gap with a bright blue spark) on both leads? Is the carby in sync with the timing?

One other thing to check: pop the "pressure" hose off the fuel pump (the one that runs over to one of the bypass covers), pump up the primer bulb and see if there's any evidence of fuel leaking out there.
If the float adjustment was way off, when you pump the primer bulb raw fuel will pour out of the carburetor. I take it this is not happening?

if it runs real smoky, check to make sure you got the sring right for the choke and that it opens all teh way and try leaning out the high speed mixture how many turns are you out now?.

Thank you all, the motor just die, no sparks.
They did a bad job on the coil and point.
and I find a tiny leek in my fuel pump, a bad gasket on the sediment bulb.

thank you all.

Does that mean you are trashing the motor or is that what you are contributing your problems too? I certainly hope you dont give up on the motor for those. Those old engines while very out of date are workhorses if you take care of them.

I think frenchi had the ignition system serviced by mechanic. Everyone always seems to be explicit when they did it themselves.

It's not uncommon. If you don't tuck those wires in there really tight they rub on the flywheel and you loose spark pretty quick. Thanks for the come-back frenchi!
