Awoke a sleeping Starflite, was sitting for over 20 years, has good compression but cant get no spark.
Got 12 volts going into the coil, checked output of coil with key on(Not cranking) with test light got nothing but got 11.5 volts with volt meter.

Does anyone know the steps to go through?

I have a dva adapter also.

Has points with cap and they all look like brand new.
(Moter had only about 15 hours on it before parked)

Thanks Mike

I can see a bare wire comming off your safety switch, looks like bad wire insulation is grounding out your ignition, I had to replicate a complete engine wire harness from the plug back on mine, used the old for a template and matched wire gauges. If that wire is touching anywhere it won't spark.

Yep, it has a bare wire on the safety switch. But that has nothing to do with the ignition. The safety switch prevents cranking the motor at a high throttle setting.

Put your voltmeter on the + post of the coil with key on. Should be 6-12 volts, depending. Now put your voltmeter on the - post of the coil and slowly rotate the flywheel. Should alternate between zero and 6-12 volts as the points open and close. If it does that, the points are doing their pointy thing.

Next step, test the coil by pulling the spark wire out of the tower, then unscrew the wire from the distributor cap. Then plug the wire back into the coil. Rig up a 1/4" spark gap off the threaded end of the wire. Crank engine. If it has spark there, the coil and points are doing their thing.

If you have spark off the coil but not off the plug wires, there is something wrong with the distributor. Probably a shorted rotor.

Simple system to check, not rocket science. Good thing you don't have a newer one.

Yes it has all parts, this moter looks in very good condition as it was not used to much,( Few wires need to be replaced is all.

One thing,
Do I need to use a dva adapter with my volt meter when doing a
spark test directly from the coil HT lead?

Thanks Mike

You don't need you DVA adapter on this engine. I told you to set up a 1/4" spark gap off the HT lead.

EDIT: I just searched for your old posts. Are you in motor repair business?

NO,Been to school years ago,and been out of it a while.

One thing .. When I put my volt meter on the Coil Where Boot is)
I read 12 volts ( Key on)

And 12 volts on the other two terminals of the coil.

Mike Correction to the information I gave in your earlier post. The 1965 no longer used that large, bolt to the transom junction box. The voltage regulator is solid state, and bolted to the power head, along with the heavy duty fuse, and rectifiying diodes.

Yes I saw that. No junction box, been doing some reading on the net.

And the points were corroded ( White)

Strange that everything else looks so clean under the cap and just the tips of the points were so bad.

Going to clean them with sandpaper and reset them.

Looks like they were touching all the time.

Thanks for all the help, will update.

Also: Took the lower unit off and its a electric shift( Wire going in drive)

Should I be able to turn the shaft? ( Could it be locked up?)

Drained the oil out and it looked good,no water or metal flakes.

That is a big water pump, and impellor, and it's been sitting a long time.

Water pump didnt look that bad,no sign of any over heating in enging.

I just cant get the shaft to turn the gears in the lower unit.

And no sign of water in it.

Dont want to disassemble the drive, not many special tools to do all that.

Mike: not being able to turn that drive shaft does'nt sound good. The only tool you need to take it apart is a flywheel puller to pull out the, main prop shaft bearing head. I alway's used the two long bolt's from an old electric starter, but a length of 1/4" all-thread would work. When you remove the two halve's be careful of the shift wire's.
