Evinrude 1966 water flow

The water flow is spitting out of my 1966 motor, should it be a steady flow or is this normal.

I replaced all the thermostat and related parts in my '65 40hp evinrude. Water doesn't come out the port above the water until the thermo opens (takes awhile), and then it's just a mist. More when powering on the water. You should be able to put your finger on the head next to the spark plug for a couple seconds before it's too uncomfortable when all warmed up. Hotter than that (like water splashed on will boil), shut it down immediately and check cooling components/passages.

Okay and thanks, I'll test when our weather gets warmer. Did it work, did you find the problem for yours or is it still spitting?

It was a new motor to me, and someone had removed the thermostat and spring and ball from there. It pumped lots of water all the time out the port, and ran well, but I wanted proper operating temp. The way it cools now is correct.. not much water/mist until powering along.. and none until thermo opens.
