Hi,

I've been working alot on this motor of mine. I've changed the impeller, spark plugs, repaired the electric shift and did a total carb cleaning.

I have a big issue now. Well the issue has always been idling under load. It was fine when I was simply putting the motor under muffs, but I set the idling higher on it so that under load it would idle fine. When I did the carb cleaning I noticed that the middle idle screw was missing the needle. When I checked inside the threaded hole I spotted the needle. So I gently tapped on the carb to let the needle fall losely, but it didn't budge. Even with spraying carb cleaner it didn't move at all. I'm at my wits end on that thing. How am I suppose to grab that thing, it's impossible to get it with longnose pliers, anyone has had the same issue?

Are you talking about a needle or a jet ?? Your model # doesn't show a needle in the parts break down.

I guess I'm not expressing myself properly. It would be what looks like part 10 or 10 A which would sit in part 27 at the end of screw 26. On the top and bottom carb, the pin is nested in part 27, but on the middle carb, it's stuck in the hole.

I'm thinking this could be the issue with my engine. It's rough under load at iddle speed, I even trim the motor up so that there's less load on it. It seems to affect the middle range speed too, when I throttle up it huff and puffs like it's dying and then it starts to accelerate normal, I even use the choke sometimes to avoid it dying while throttling up.

Part 27 is an idle jet and should be open with nothing in it. What do the other carbs look like ??

10 or 10A is a roll pin and should not be anywhere near 27.
27 should have a screwdriver slot in it to take it out, is there something jammed into the hole in 27?

Thank you for your hellp BTW. In fact the parts are a little different from the pictures. The whole screw is in brass and ends with a aluminum needle. On the top and bottom carbs when I remove the screw, the needle comes with it as if it's fused with the screw. In the middle carb, the needle is stuck in the hole, so no matter how I try to adjust the idle screw, it's not even budging the needle, it's stuck there. And I'm not sure if it creates issues where the motor can't iddle properly and can't accelerate properly.

I will take picture when the weather permits it in order to show exactly what I mean

I'm now wondering if I have the proper carbs for that motor. The tag on the motor is 65373S but it doesn't seem to exist in the evinrude motor listing for 1973. I'm wondering if it's late 1972 or early 1973 wich would probably explain why the carbs are 1972 models. Should I purchase new carbs to solve that idling issue?

The needle goes into a passage under the core plug on top of the carb. If you remove the core plug, maybe you can seal off the other small passages with a piece of tape on the inside of the cavity and blow air into the cavity and dislodge it that way.

That's a good idea, I will try that. Should I be really carefull when I remove the core plug: i.e.: Is there any small moving parts in there that I could loose if I turn it upside down?

No moving parts, just tiny passages on the bottom and the needle goes in from the front. You might be able to see the tip of the needle poking out of the front wall.
I usually use a 1/8" punch, use a hammer and lightly tap the punch through the core plug and just pop it out.

Good luck, sometimes you have to think outside of the box.

You got that right. It's my first time doing mechanic that goes further than changing a flat tire or cleaning an air filter. As I see it, I paid 700$ for the boat, motor and trailer, so it's no big loss if I make mistakes. I sure wish I could get that engine runing properly. I have a restoration plan for that boat and I would love to keep that 65hp on there.

Re: Evinrude 1973 65373S Idle needle stuck in Carb 2

Finally I decided to leave the carbs alone. I found out that it was idling ok, the problem came from two things. The throttle adjustment and the orientation of the gaz tank. It was sitting against the direction of the gaz line, making it difficult to bring fuel to the engine. As for the acceleration problems (engine crawling to get to speed and almost choking to get to speed), once it's been running for 10-15 minutes, it seems to be responsive to the throttle increases.

Anyone!! I was just curious to how you go about removing the 2 core plugs on the carb.. I just purchased the rebuild kit and I do not know how to remove them I do not want to tear anything up>> THANKS in advance!

bosman02, you should start a new thread so you can keep track of responces.
To ansewer your question, you should only have to remove the core plug on the top of the carb for a carb overhaul. Two ways to do it, use a 1/8" drill bit and drill through the core plug and then pop it out with a sharp scribe, don't drill to deep just through the core plug.
The other way, the way I do it, just use a 1/8" punch and drive it through the plug, there soft, and pop it out.
